Legacy/Meritage -Why would builders want defective construction to become legal dispute?
Sunday, 25 March 2007

Dream homes not so sweet
On Sept. 25, Meritage offered to make all repairs to the homes recommended by DPIS and approved by the state, Hays said. Those repairs consisted of removing the shingles and roofing felt, refastening the roof decking, then replacing the felt and shingles...
But the Alvarez and Mayes families, citing other structural issues, say they want Meritage to buy their homes from them. They also are seeking monetary damages for what they say is “loss of enjoyment of life,” according to the lawsuit. “This includes Meritage Homes’ refusal to take responsibility for its role in the creation and filing of falsified inspection reports or applications with the state,” Dupuy said Thursday in a written statement. “The homebuyers, in this case, who were tricked into buying homes that were not windstorm compliant, have pleaded with Meritage Homes for a fair resolution. Their pleas fell on deaf corporate ears.”

Legacy homeowners upset with warranty follow-up
Wednesday, 22 December 2004

By BYRON HARRIS / WFAA-TVThe fact is new car warranties, which commonly last three years, are a lot better than home warranties in Texas. After a year, Legacy and most other big builders said an owner's gripes are not their problem… And in addition to lasting just a year, warranties don't cover much. .."These warranties are limited so much that they don't resemble a warranty, but they become a disclaimer for the builder," said Janet Ahmad of Homeowners for Better Building. "(They're) not a protection for the homebuyer..."

Homeowners: We're tired of builder inattention
  Video: Byron Harris reports
Wednesday, December 1, 2004
By BYRON HARRIS / WFAA-TV
Find a homeowner, and there's a good chance you'll hear a complaint about a homebuilder...Waterford Oaks East in Cedar Hill is just such a place, though, and buyers are angry about the workmanship and business practices of builder Legacy Homes... Ahmad sees similar problems among many Texas builders. "We find a pattern of structural defects; we find a pattern of sloppy work," she said. "It's the problem of getting the builder to address the issue whether it's minor or whether it's major." ... Ahmad said Texas warranties are designed to protect the builder rather than the homeowner. Until that changes, she said the only solution is to stay vocal and be persistent. ... Until we can regulate the industry, homeowners have only one choice, and that is to be very public about their problem and to make a pest of themselves."
