Homeowners in a newly built neighborhood in Desert Hot Springs may finally see justice in what they call shoddy work on their houses.
The 40 residents in Hacienda Heights filed suit against their homebuilders and their subcontractors, saying the hoes they bought were built in violation of state and local building codes.
One of those homeowners, Brian Fortner, says his home started to develop problems when he settled in.
"Water leaks in our kitchen," Fortner said of the problems. "The walls aren't straight. Our stucco is sub par. The foundation is cracking on the inside"
Fortner also says mold inside the home has now made him so sick that doctors told him he couldn't live there anymore.
And he says what's worse of all is that the homebuilders aren't doing anything about it.
"They refused to fix things. They called out toxic molds a mildew problem and gave us some hints how we can get rid of it ourselves. That's when we were told to buy Lysol to spray it and kill it."
The Salas family says they're $380,000 home became a lemon.
"It seems like the contract material is cheap, everything breaks," Salas says. "Where you connect for the lights don't work, they burn out."
Fortner and dozens of other homeowners in the community are suing the three builders they saw were responsible for the work on their homes. The builders being sued are Hacienda Heights L.L.C., Mayer/Luce Enterprises, and LTV Builders/Developers Inc.
NewsChannel 3 tried contacting the builders buy they were not available for comment.
NewsChannel 3 Investigators will continue to follow this story and bring the latest legal proceedings in this home building battle.
