A New Way To Find Hidden Mold (NBC 10.com, PA - Jul 15, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NORRISTOWN, Pa. -- Mold can be a dangerous health risk when one is exposed to its invisible spores and many people often live in a moldy environment, unbeknownst to them.
But there is now a new way to find the hidden mold in your home; it's named "Hunter."
Greasewood homes with mold getting facelift (Gallup Independent, NM - Jul 15, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GREASEWOOD SPRINGS - The smell of fresh paint has replaced the musty smell in Navajo Housing Authority's Greasewood Springs development.

Amy Begay looks around her refinished three- bedroom home with satisfaction, eyeing the corners where mold made its home just four months before.

Massachusetts corruption BLOG (Boston Herald, MA - Jul 6, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1993, we discovered that our home had many structural problems. From that period we constantly asked our Town and State officials to inspect our home. The Town went so far as to say that if they inspected they would incriminate themselves.
All refused our requests for inspections except the Massachusetts Rehab Commission. They sent an inspector but he said not to turn on the water when he was suppose to be looking for water leaks. When he saw nothing leaking, he said there was no problem. My Wife turned on the water and the leaking started. He still reported nothing wrong.
City of Lawrence, Illinois lawsuit claims faults in three of its buildings (Indianapolis Star, IN - Jul 14, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three government buildings in Lawrence -- including the main City Hall building -- were built incorrectly and require substantial repairs, according to a lawsuit filed by the city.

Some of the repairs already have been made, including mold remediation, but the city is seeking damages from several contractors, the construction manager and the government holding corporations that technically own the buildings.

No quick, easy fix for fire station mold -- 40 Firefighters Plaintiffs in Suit Against M.G. Patton Construction (Atlanta Journal Constitution (free electronic subscription), GA - Jul 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fire Station 21 remains empty, and firefighters won't be moving back anytime soon. And when they do move back, it likely will be into a trailer parked in the back parking lot.
Firefighters on May 31 moved out of the fire station near Ball Ground in the northeast corner of the county to allow crews to knock out a bathroom wall to remove mold. They were scheduled to move back in three to four weeks.
Couple sues Oklahoma Department of Transportation for Mold Problem (Tahlequah Daily Press, OK - Jul 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A lawsuit alleges improvements the Oklahoma Department of Transportation made to State Highway 82 from 1998-2004 in the Park Hill area have caused the flooding of a Cherokee County couple's property.

Freddie and Betty Guthrie say their property was flooded by run-off water originating from the highway and right-of-way. The flooding caused damage to the real estate and personal property by saturating items, which resulted in mold invading the real and personal property of the Guthries.

Mold Education: National Institutes of Health Description of Mold Allergies
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Allergy-related symptoms can occur after exposure to mold, particles of animal skin usually found on animal hair (dander), dust, or other substances. These substances are usually in found indoors and do not cause symptoms for most people. (See also asthma and allergic rhinitis.) The symptoms are identical to those of hay fever sufferers, who are sensitive to pollen.
Allergies are caused by an oversensitive immune system, leading to a misdirected immune response. The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances such as bacteria and viruses. Allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to substances (allergens) that are generally harmless and in most people do not cause an immune response.
Mold found in school lunchrooms (Monterey County Herald, CA - Jul 12, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some Salinas students will be eating in portable lunchrooms when school starts in the fall because moldy walls or rain damage have left six of the district's nine multi-purpose rooms either condemned or in need of serious repair.

The Alisal Union School District is currently inspecting moldy drywall and wood inside the walls of multi- purpose rooms at five schools that were built during the early 1990s -- Alisal, Fremont, Jesse G. Sanchez, Frank Paul and Bardin elementary schools. The multi- purpose room at a sixth school, Virginia Rocca Barton, has been condemned because of a damaged support beam on the ceiling that requires an engineer's inspection, said Deputy Superintendent Robert Guillen.

Court Mold: Jackson County examines ideas for mold cleanup (The Southern, IL - Jul 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MURPHYSBORO - All signs indicate there is toxic mold in the basement of the Jackson County courthouse. Now, county officials are faced with the task of figuring out how to remove it, a process they learned won't be cheap.
During a building and grounds committee meeting Monday, county board members were bombarded with ideas from different mold disposal companies. Ted Williams, a consultant to the county on air and heating issues, outlined a plan to dry out the basement that comes with at least a $5,000 price tag. Williams said that estimate does not include the energy costs it would take to run the necessary equipment or new equipment that might be required.
Mold & Insurance: $125,500 given for damage by bad Price Pfister faucet -- The Hartford Hires Expert Who Determines Cause (Seattle Times, WA - Jul 16, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A federal jury yesterday awarded $125,500 in damages to a former Issaquah couple whose home was flooded when a faulty Price Pfister faucet "turned itself on" and sent more than 17,000 gallons of water cascading from a second-floor bathroom.

The Kludases' insurance carrier, The Hartford, sent the faucet to a forensic engineer who determined that a "bad casting" was to blame. During a court break, Jim Heiden, the carrier's general adjuster, said "it's possible" there were other faulty faucets, but also that Price Pfister "probably has good quality controls."

Mold & Legislation: Senator Marcellino Announces New Task Force Created to Assess Toxic Mold (LongIslandPress.com, NY - Jun 22, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legal and environmental experts have called toxic mold infestation the 21st century equivalent of asbestos in its potential for both litigation and health problems. But Sen. Carl Marcellino (R-Syosset) announced the "Toxic Mold Task Force" on June 22, saying it's time for New York State to evaluate the issue of toxic mold and the danger it presents to people within buildings and structures.
"This is a positive step in evaluating health risks and reviewing government regulations or standards concerning containment or remediation of identified toxic mold in our homes, schools and commercial buildings," says Marcellino, chairman of the New York State Senate Environmental Conservation Committee.
Mold & Legislation: New codes on school health weighed - Some Washington State parents, activists press for regulations, not just guidelines (Seattle Post Intelligencer, WA - Jul 15, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The state Board of Health is considering sweeping changes to school health and safety rules that could offer better protection to children, but whether those changes will result in regulations rather than guidelines remains to be seen.

Representing the first major overhaul of the state code governing health and safety in K-12 schools since it was adopted more than 30 years ago, the proposed changes focus on three areas: safety, drinking water and indoor air quality.

For Fun: J.K. Rowling's Official Website
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Spend Friday night at a book store, and the rest of the weekend reading? My children and I were at Borders in Arcadia, California until 12:45 a.m. We're well into the book, although we didn't spend the whole weekend reading -- my voice wouldn't hold out!
The graphics on this website are gorgeous, and it is the only site J.K. Rowlings posts to. Lots of fun facts and additional info. One criticism -- it's designed for a 17" screen and hard to navigate on smaller screens. (My own website, www.cmsynergy. com, is designed for 15" screens to accommodate the lowest common denominator.)
