Homeowners with Chinese drywall have noticed that their A/C coils,
- which are supposed to be copper, have turned black in color.
WASHINGTON DC (CBS4) -South Florida families dealing with toxic Chinese drywall in their homes may one day get help from the federal government.
Last week the U.S House approved a measure that directs the secretaries of housing and treasury to launch a study on the impact the tainted drywall has had mortgages and property insurance for homeowners affected by this problem.
Homeowners who have the tainted plasterboard in their homes say the material gives off fumes which not only makes them sick but also corrodes pipes, blackens jewelry and silverware, and leaves air conditioners ruined.
The measure was attached to a mortgage reform bill which passed 300-114, it now moves to the Senate.
CBS4 news partners The Miami Herald report U.S Representatives Robert Wexler and Mario Diaz Balart, who pushed the measure before the House, also want $2 million in emergency funds to the Consumer Product Safety Commission can study the problems associated with defective wall board.
More than 36 thousand homes in Florida are thought to have the toxic drywall which was imported into the U.S. between 2004 and 2007; nationwide more than 100 thousand homes are thought to be affected.
