SAN ANTONIO - The roads are simply falling apart in the Ventura Heights subdivision off FM-78, where cars have to try and dodge dangerous potholes all over.

Now a new group is working to get developers to fix the unsafe streets.

"A lot of them needed to be nudged," said Bexar County Commissioner Tommy Adkisson about the developers. "They needed to be given and impetus to get this done."

Commissioner Adkisson is heading the new ad hoc committee that is made up of builders, realtors, Ventura Heights homeowner and their advocates.

They are talking about options for homeowners if the private roads are not maintained by the developers.

"Until their subdivision is actually accepted by the county, and that's their subdivision developer's responsibility, the county does not step up to pick up the maintenance," said Adkisson. "I think a lot of homeowners are not really aware of that."

Some homeowners attending the meeting say they were not happy to hear it could cost them up to $57-million to repair the shoddy work of the builder who is no longer around.

"I don't feel like it was productive," said homeowner Thomasina Nichols about the meeting. "I feel like they still want us, as the homeowner, to be responsible for something that we shouldn't be held responsible for."

That is why Adkisson says the county will continue putting the pressure on the developers.

"That's why we want those who are responsible to take responsibility. We will be on these folks, and we will be at it and we want to help the people who are out there feeling like they are fending for themselves."
