Washington State Senator's Opinion - Give homeowners some basic rights
Faulty construction is a nightmare for too many new homeowners...Under current Washington law, contractors do not have to pass any qualifying tests. A contractor's "license" can be bought in a day... It is time to remedy this nightmare with common-sense legislation that gives homeowners some basic rights...To make matters worse, in today's market buyers often release all warranty rights, even the rights provided by statutes, in exchange for nearly worthless third-party home warranty companies...A homebuyer's bill of rights, which I plan to introduce in Olympia, includes holding contractors liable for their mistakes for several years and giving subsequent buyers the same rights as original buyers. |

Builder denies blame despite claims of shoddy roof work
Richmond American Homes has built more than 125,000 houses across the country, raking in billions of dollars each year...Of the more than 10,000 houses the company has built in Tucson, several dozen stand in Continental Ranch, where residents claim shoddy roof construction has left them with leaks, rotting wood and even fungi growing inside their homes. More than 50 irritated homeowners filled Marana's Town Council chambers last week to voice their frustrations.

Buckled unpainted exterior siding, flooded crawlspaces, mold in the attic, cramped unpaved driveways and unfinished landscaping have left owners of two units frustrated and unsure about what to do next. Construction on the triplex followed completion last year of a successful duplex next door by Whitefish Housing Development Inc., the nonprofit building-arm of the Whitefish Housing Authority, which handles financing for the city's affordable housing program. |

Dishonest Contractors Running Rampant in New Orleans Area
The number of complaints against builders and home-improvement contractors has reached epidemic proportions, said Charles Marceaux, executive director of the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors.Since Katrina, the state has issued 463 citations to contractors for shoddy work and failure to obtain the appropriate state license. In the year leading up to Katrina, the state issued only 237 citations. |
