Good Morning,

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day, this week's photo is of Dr. King from the americanpopularculture.com website.

Take a look at the article about the unfortunate train wreck in Georgia. It appears that chlorine gas removes mold. What a dangerous way to find out that particular fact.

Fla. H.B. 117 to Require Certification for Mold Remediation Professionals (Insurance Journal - Jan 14, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legislation to require mold professionals working in Florida to be trained, licensed and certified has been filed by Rep. Carl J. Domino (R-West Palm Beach). House Bill 117, co-sponsored by Rep. Franklin Sands (D-Weston), is waiting for committee references from the House Speaker's Office to be considered during the 2005 Florida Legislative Session.
Domino filed the measure during the 2004 legislative session, but the mold issue has received increased public concern due to the impact of last year's catastrophic hurricane season. In support of his effort, Domino touts a statewide coalition of mold professionals and advocate groups, including the Florida Coalition for Healthy Indoor Environments and the American Indoor Air Quality Association. These groups, along with constituents who urged for the bill, plan to help lobby H.B. 117 during the legislative session.
'Mold issues' spark makeover for governor's staff offices (The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MO - Jan 14, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JEFFERSON CITY - Mold, worn carpets, wild temperature variations and musty smells prompted a renovation of the governor's staff offices.

The offices, which will house about 20 members of Gov. Matt Blunt's staff, are undergoing a monthlong renovation including new carpeting, lights, ceiling tiles, thermostats and a fresh coat of paint. Blunt's office estimates the work will cost $20,000 to $25,000.

Library has mold - Medford's new main library had to shut down the children's section when workers became sick amid a musty smell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A hidden mold colony has forced the closure of the children's section of the new Medford Library for about a week after employees complained about headaches, sore throats and a musty smell. Ronnie Budge, Jackson County Library director, said the employees have recovered and no parents or children reported any problems.
Budge said the discoloration turned out to be aspergillus, a common type of mold that grows on porous surfaces in the northern hemisphere during the fall and winter months. She said most people aren't allergic to the mold, although it could irritate those who have asthma or other lung problems.
Experts give advice about insurance, mold after flood (Marion Chronicle Tribune, IN - Jan 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"First of all, if you think your basement is going to flood, you need to take most of your valuables out of the basement," said Ryan Stevens, manager of Tri R Steamer Carpet Cleaner. "The second thing is you're going to have to get that water pumped out of there and you not only have wet carpet, you have wet walls. On a finished basement, you have drywall and water will soak that up and get behind it."

"It takes 72 hours for mold and mildew to start to grow if there are the right conditions. The right conditions are dampness, darkness and stagnant air," Stevens said. "You need to get someone in there as quick as you can." To determine if mold or bacteria is growing in a room, investigators will take air samples and wipe samples and search air conditioning and heating ducts, said Patrick Griffin, president and CEO of ACM Engineering and Environmental Services. The company works with insurance companies and individuals to search for contamination inside homes.

A Very Unfortunate Way to Get Rid of Mold: Fear Lingers After Cloud Clears - People evacuated after a train crash caused a deadly chlorine spill express unease about the homes they are beginning to return to. (Los Angeles Times (free subscription), CA - 17 hours ago)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dawn Smith circled her house nervously on the morning she was allowed to return.
A white flower had bloomed while she was away. The mildew that sprinkled the shady side of her house had vanished, as if someone had scrubbed it. And when Smith found her dog, a chocolate Labrador, the animal was alive but had been bleached two shades lighter.
Fort Lauderdale · U.S. Rep. Clay Shaw said Thursday he will oppose a plan to close Fort Lauderdale's federal courthouse and consolidate operations in Miami and West Palm Beach.
School Mold: Roofing problems force Union Co. school to close again (WATE.com, TN - Jan 12, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UNION COUNTY (WATE) -- Tuesday's rain and a building plagued by problems caused another day off Wednesday for students at Luttrell Elementary School. Workers continued repairing the roof Wednesday. The sun was out but the rain on the day before put a damper on their plans.

While they worked, it started to rain hard. Not even a temporary tarp helped. Water leaked onto electrical equipment in the kitchen. "I felt like that was a danger to anyone trying to do any cooking or even cleaning up," says Union County Director of Schools Charles Thomas.

Mold & Insurance: Why are insurance companies refusing to pay for molds (Express Newsline, India - Jan 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The consumer is facing a problem with the mold in the house as the insurance companies are refusing to pay. This issue has been a new and increasing problem for consumers and insurance officials to agree upon. Although doctors agree some mold can be toxic, and if the problem spreads the homes can be inhabitable, insurance companies claim it is not covered. There are reasons for the disagreement and until insurance companies and consumers can resolve this issue, homeowners can take a variety of preventative measures against mold.
As mold grows little by little it should be taken care of as a part of the regular maintenance for a home. For example, if you have pipes that leak gradually and cause damage to your walls that is not usually covered by your policy. That is considered gradual "wear and tear" and is the responsibility of the homeowner. Of course, with a leaky pipe, one would eventually realize the problem and fix it.
Mold Litigation (coming your way soon): Building defects causing big problems (KSBY, CA - Jan 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Homeowners in one Central Coast neighborhood say problems with leaky roofs, mold, and other faulty construction are the direct result of a greedy developer.

More than a dozen homeowners in the Rancho Obispo subdivision in San Luis Obispo say the problems were caused by cheap materials used by their developer, Ventura-based RW Hertel and Sons.

Mold & Technology: THE ABCs OF IAQ (RedNova.com, TX - Jan 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As indoor air quality appears more often in newspaper articles, make sure your school district doesn't accompany the headlines. White papers and guidelines these days refer to it in milder terms - "indoor air quality" (affectionately known as IAQ) simply doesn't have the kick "sick building syndrome" packs. School administrators should count that a lucky break.
The topic is contagious, assures Alan Hedge, a professor in the department of design and environmental analysis at Cornell University in Ithaca, N. Y. In his presentation at the 1st Asian Indoor Air Quality Seminar last decade, he pointed out that sometimes our sensory systems can cause us to imagine we've been exposed to a hazardous pollutant, even when it's not the case.
Mold & Medicine: Healthy Mix Of GI Tract Microbes Are Key To Preventing Allergies And Asthma (Science Daily - Jan 12, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - If you want to avoid allergies or asthma, scientists at the University of Michigan Medical School suggest you start paying more attention to what's in your gut.

In the January 2005 issue of Infection & Immunity, U- M researchers report new evidence suggesting that changes in the normal mixture of microflora - bacteria and fungi in the gastrointestinal tract - can intensify the immune system's reaction to common allergens, like pollen or animal dander, in the lung and increase the risk of developing chronic allergies or asthma.

For Fun: In Honor of George Bush's Second Term, More George Bushisms
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No matter what you think of George Bush, you have to admit that he's had some pretty amusing verbal slips. Personally, the "Wings Have Dreams" speech stands out in my mind. This is a link to 50 of the funniest quotes. Here's a few:
