FEMA News: Mold May Be Present In Flood-Damaged Homes (Community Dispatch - Mar 21, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Columbus, Ohio -- Homes that were affected by the severe winter storms and flooding that began December 22, could be harboring mold.
"Mold is a significant problem after flooding and proper cleanup is critical to ensure it doesn't affect you or your family's health," said Lee Champagne, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) federal coordinating officer for the disaster. "Care must be taken to clean and completely dry areas of the home soaked by floodwaters to prevent structural damage and adverse health effects from mold."
Charley, Frances, Jeanne & Ivan Follow-Up: Mold, other problems generated by Hurricane Ivan increasing Panhandle homeless (Sun-Sentinel.com, FL - Mar 14, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PENSACOLA -- Hurricane Ivan is forcing a second wave of people from their homes six months after it struck. Some who tried to stay in storm-damaged houses are leaving because mold has made the buildings health hazards and others who lost their jobs are running out of rent or mortgage money, the Pensacola News Journal reported in Monday editions.
Also, some people have had to leave rental homes _ a scare commodity since the Sept. 16 storm _ because landlords haven't repaired damage because they lack insurance, plan to make other use of the property or are delaying so they can charge higher rents after tenants leave.

CNN Money: Lead paint, mold and pesky ghost - Sellers, if you don't disclose all you know about your house, it could come back to haunt you. (CNN - Mar 17, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SALEM, Ore. (CNN/Money) - When your house is on the market, you brag about its best features. When you accept an offer, however, you'll need to disclose all of its flaws.
Some are obvious, like water damage or termites. But it's your obligation to come clean about everthing -- even the ones that might just be a figment of your imagination.
Mold Education: Antifungal Drugs - Allylamines and other non-azole ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ These agents act in a variety of fashions, but fundamentally all lead to reduced ergosterol biosynthesis and are thus conceptually related to the azole antifungal agents. One example is terbinafine, which acts by inhibiting squalene epoxidase.
The only member of this group is terbinafine, and this agent acts by inhibiting squalene epoxidase. This is another enzyme in the pathway that leads to synthesis of ergosterol, so this agent is conceptually related to the azole antifungal agents. Terbinafine is mainly effective on a specific group of fungi, dermatophytes. Terbinafine (aka Lamasil) has in vitro activity also against most Candida spp., Aspergillus spp., Sporothrix schenckii , Penicillium marneffei , Malassezia furfur , Cryptococcus neoformans , Trichosporon spp. and Blastoschizomyces.

Mold & Litigation: Environmental Legal Blogs from a Skeptical Lawyer is Online (PR Web, WA - Mar 15, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (PRWEB) March 15, 2005 -- A new "Blog" (Environmental Legal Blogs) now covers recent developments in US and California environmental law from the perspective of an attorney practicing in the environmental field for almost a quarter-century.
Why is Environmental Legal Blogs unusual? Unlike the majority of environmental publications and Blogs, Environmental Legal Blogs refuses uncritically to accept the common assumption that the more regulation, the better. The Blog tries fairly to summarize emerging issues but at the same time to stress the scientific uncertainties and inequities often accompanying new, "feel good" laws and regulations. The Blog from time to time also invites experts on a given topic to submit featured Posts that share such experts' perspective with the reader.
For Fun: Fun Facts About Fungi (TM)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a fun site for educators -- or anyone looking for an animated version of how sporangium works in fungal reproduction.
A cow stays close to its calf to make sure it will get everything it needs to grow. In the grass around their hooves, the fungus Pilobolus does exactly the opposite. To help its spores, Pilobolus uses a "shotgun" to blast them as far away as possible. Pilobolus lives in cow dung. This life habit may seem terrible to us, but fungi like Pilobolus are very important in nature. These fungi, called "decomposers" break down non-living organic matter by feeding on it. Some bacteria and animals are also decomposers. Without them, we would be surrounded everywhere by piles of dead plants, animals and dung.
