The Morning Call Poconos home builder is charged in real estate fraud investigation District attorney's office says it is looking into six other firms. By Matt Birkbeck Of The Morning Call February 3, 2005 A day after announcing felony charges against a Poconos home builder, the Monroe County district attorney's office said it's aggressively investigating at least six other builders in a widening probe of real estate fraud.
The charges against developer Keith Kunz, 52, the owner of Rosewood Homes in Tannersville, are the first that District Attorney E. David Christine filed in allegations of a wide range of Poconos housing fraud, including phantom and inflated down payments.
The counts come just three weeks after the state attorney general filed charges alleging fraud against the principals of Eagle Valley Homes in Brodheadsville.
Efforts Wednesday to reach Christine for comment were unsuccessful.
But Detective Eric Kerchner, who conducted the Kunz investigation, said separate investigations targeting at least six other builders were continuing.
''This is a very, very active investigation,'' he said.
Kunz, of Mount Bethel; his daughter, Ryancourt.
At a January news conference to announce the indictments in the Eagle Valley case, former state Attorney General Jerry Pappert declined to discuss the status of his investigation.
But Kerchner said the Monroe district attorney's office opened new probes in the past year into other builders not referred to by the attorney general.
The expanding scope and breadth of the county investigation forced the hiring of another detective, Kerchner said.
''The majority of our files are builder-related,'' he said.
