Good Morning,
I'm afraid that Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis is back in the news -- and it has been discovered in multiple places in North America. That's the fungus that causes chytrid disease, which causes death or mutation in amphibians.
This week's photo is of the Northern Leopard Frog, from the Nova Scotia Museum website.

Good Neighbor Mold Removal (Absolute Organics Restoration) (KAIT, AR - Jul 17, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JONESBORO, AR--Imagine if your house was making you sick. That was the scenario for a Region 8 family after black mold was found in their house. Scared and panicked, the Hargetts turned to insurance companies and banks for help only to be turned down.
The nasty problem cost the Hargetts their home, their possessions, and even their health. "It's amazing how much it can make you sick," said Tammy Hargett.
A Teacher's Nightmare: Teacher Forced to Move From Home Because Santa Ana Unified (Jul 3, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Santa Ana, CA - Denise Byrd, a teacher of 15 years in the Santa Ana Unified School District, (SAUSD), became ill with lung damage and other secondary physical problems around March 2001, when the portable classroom she worked in was discovered to have serious toxic mold infestation.
The results of the District's own testing showed Denise Byrd's classroom at Jefferson Elementary in Santa Ana, had one of the highest Toxic Mold counts among 15 other classrooms that were tested.

Anti-fungal drug scandal: Drug Trials With a Dose of Doubt (LA Times - Jul 16, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An NIH scientist with ties to pharmaceutical firms helped test their new drugs. Some peers questioned the results of the studies. BETHESDA, Md. â On Jan. 10, 2001, pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. gathered its forces in a hotel conference room here with a clear-cut mission: Win a favorable vote for a new antifungal drug from a federal advisory committee â a victory that would position the product for swift government approval and for hundreds of millions of dollars in sales. But after hours of speeches and slides, the committee members, appointed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, had yet to vote. The members were focused on the quality of Merck's case for the new drug, which rested on the treatment of only 69 patients.
Merck summoned to the microphone one of its announced consultants, a man whose government job was nearby, at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Thomas J. Walsh assured the committee that Merck's data describing the patients was "extremely robust and very, very rigorous." He said his government staff had assisted in vetting the company's data. About 30% of the patients were helped by the drug, he said.
Fungus attacking frogs: Chytrid fungus invades Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon Parks (Union Democrat, CA - Jul 12, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A persistent and deadly new fungus attacking amphibians around the world now has biologists keeping a close eye on the Sierra. Ebbetts Pass, which provides easy access to alpine lakes and wetlands, has become a local research hub for scientists hunting the fungus. The bad news is, it doesn't take much of a hunt.
That's according to University of California, Berkeley professor David Wake, who has studied the area extensively and found the fungus on the skin of frogs and toads near the pass. The fungus worries Wake, but the reasons for the fungus â and the questions surrounding it â where did it come from and why are so many frogs dying? â worry him even more.

Airport Security Measures May Spread Fungus (WLNS, MI - Jul 8, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Safety precautions at the airport now require most people to take their shoes off as they pass through security, but it may not be that safe to the passenger. Researchers gathered bacteria from the ground where passengers must walk, without shoes, to see what they could find.
The findings are startling. Scientists found mold that causes ring worm and bacteria that causes a disease of the scalp. Doctors also took control samples from where people keep their shoes on, and the bacteria was not found in those areas.
Officials Warn of Mold from Water Damage - A foot of rain could result in more mold in Northern Virginia homes. (Burke Connection, VA - Jul 10, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As Northern Virginians work to dry out rugs and flooded basements after record-setting rains, Fairfax County health officials have released information for residents concerned about an increase of household mold spores associated with water damage.
"We get a lot of questions about mold and people become alarmed when they see it in their homes and what effect this could have on their health," said John Yetman, an environmental health specialist with Fairfax Countyâs Department of Health. "Weâre trying to get some of those questions answered . . . and explain to people that itâs not necessarily a dire situation."

Mold Education: Chytridiomycosis (Australian Department of the Environment and Heritage, 2004)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Chytridiomycosis is an infectious disease that affects amphibians worldwide. It is caused by the chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis), a fungus capable of causing sporadic deaths in some amphibian populations and 100% mortality in others. The disease has been implicated in the mass die-offs and species extinctions of frogs in the past 15 years, but its origin and its true impact on populations remain uncertain and are under investigation.
History
First discovered in dead and dying frogs in Queensland in 1993, chytridiomycosis is a highly infectious disease of amphibians, caused by the amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. Research since then has shown that the fungus is widespread across Australia and has been present in the country since at least 1978. It is also found in Africa, the Americas, Europe, New Zealand and Oceania.
School Mold: Souderton Area Parents press district on mold (Lansdale Reporter, PA - Jul 14, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FRANCONIA â Parents urged the Souderton Area School Board on Thursday to make sure past mold problems at the West Broad Street Elementary School have been rectified. Testing last year had detected the presence of mold and bacteria at the school. Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Health subsequently made recommendations to improve indoor air quality in district schools.
Kelly Murphy said Cristina Schulingkampâ an environmental engineer with the Environmental Protection Agencyâ had recently visited modular classrooms at the school and found the air to be stagnant. The carpeting was also bucklingâ and Schulingkamp felt there could be standing waterâ Murphy said. She added that Schulingkamp had also commented that such conditions could cause children to have trouble focusing in class

Mold & Hurricanes: Department of Environmental Health offers help to address problem of mould (Cayman Net News, Cayman Islands - Jul 14, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In the wake of Hurricane Ivan the health issues arising from both acute and chronic exposure to mould became increasingly apparent. As a result a set of guidelines-Indoor Mould Prevention and Remediation in Buildings-has being issued by the Department of Environmental Health (DEH), following extensive research and consultation with an overseas expert.
Concerns with indoor mould contamination arose here following Ivan's widespread water intrusion damage to all types of buildings on Grand Cayman in 2004.
More Chytrid disease: Fatal frog fungus found in Maine (ChronicleHerald.ca, Canada - Jul 8, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ORONO, Maine â In the nine years since Joyce Longcore first described a fungus that has been killing amphibians worldwide, she has traveled to three continents to train scientists to work with it.
The fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, has been implicated in amphibian deaths from Arizona to Australia, but Longcore does not have to go far from her cramped lab here at the University of Maine to find infected frogs: She has found it on frogs killed by cars on the road nearby.

More Chytrid disease: EXTINCTION CRISIS FOR AMPHIBIANS - Frogs, toads and other species dying off -- new fungus magnifies environmental problems (San Francisco Chronicle, USA - Jul 7, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A strange new fungus disease that kills frogs and toads and every other species of amphibian is spreading around the globe and -- combined with pollution and overdevelopment -- is driving more and more of the creatures to extinction, a coalition of the world's top biologists warns.
At least one-third of the world's known amphibians are threatened by the combination of attacks, and up to 122 species have become extinct within the past 25 years, the international team of specialists is reporting in today's edition of the journal Science.
