Good Morning,

Last week was a slow week for mold news, but a big week for technology releases. There's an interesting dichotomy in these mold stories. The National Resources Defense Counsel (NRDC) thinks Katrina-related mold is a problem. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) doesn't think so.

This week's main photo is Aspergillus niger from www.e urobloodsubstitutes.com.

Mold Plaintiff in HUD Housing amends class complaint instead of listing damage (St. Clair Record, IL - Jun 9, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Suspense keeps building as the Madison County justice system awaits a list of moldy stuff from a Venice apartment.
Fourteen months after Kesha Manning proposed a class action lawsuit over mold at Bissell Apartments, she has not identified anything the mold damaged.
Circuit Judge Andy Matoesian on April 7 ordered her to make a list of personal property that mold damaged, but through June 7 she had sent the court no list.
Manning in April 2005 sued BA- 2003, the limited partnership that owned Bissell Apartments, and Independent Management Services, the property manager.
Study Finds High Mold Levels in Post-Katrina New Orleans Air (Homeland Response, OH - Jul 6, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Airborne mold levels left in New Orleans pose a "significant respiratory hazard" to residents returning to the devastated city in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, according to a paper published on the Web site of the peer-reviewed scientific journal Environmental Health Perspectives. The paper – the first scientific study of New Orleans air quality since Hurricane Katrina – was published by a team of researchers from the University of Colorado, Boulder; University of California, Berkeley; and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The researchers did the study in collaboration with New Orleans community groups.

"The mold levels we found across the city could easily trigger serious allergic or asthmatic reactions in sensitive people," said Dr. Gina Solomon, M.D., the NRDC senior scientist who led the research team. "The indoor air quality in the flooded homes was particularly worrisome, but fortunately, the homes that had been fully gutted and cleaned up did appear to have lower levels."

Top 10 States at Risk for Mold - Western Real Estate in Danger Despite Dry Climate (Yahoo! News - Jul 10, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ATLANTA, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Contrary to popular belief, climate is not a good gauge for mold risk, according to a ranking of states at risk for mold contamination on commercial and residential property.
Areas with dry climates like Nevada and Arizona made it to the top ten while some Gulf States did not come close.
Because mold damage is now excluded or severely limited on standard property insurance, concerns about the financial impact of a mold outbreak in a home or business continue to rise.
Mold Growth in Flooded Homes No Cause for Alarm (American Council on Science and Health, NY - Jul 3, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Editor's Note: I'm only reporting this news story - - I didn't write it.] In these hot and humid months of summer, drying out the recently flooded homes in the northeast states will be no easy task. Along with repairing structural and cosmetic damage, people may find themselves in a battle with mold.

Increasingly, homeowner's insurance policies are not covering the costs of mold damage and removal, so as people are working to clean the growth out of their homes and offices themselves, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is providing information on the health implications of mold growth.

Early fungal exposure can enhance non-fungal allergy risk (Reuters - Jul 5, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Exposure to certain airborne fungal spores in early childhood may increase the risk of developing non-fungal allergies, according to researchers at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. Conversely, some fungal types seem to protect against the development of allergies.
"It turns out that the health effects of airborne fungal spores are more complicated than we thought," one of the researchers, Dr. Tiina Reponen, said in a statement.
Israeli Breakthrough: Aspergillus niger as a promising new cancer treatment (Scientist Live, UK - Jul 7, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A promising new avenue of drug treatment for halting the growth and spread of cancer cells has been opened thanks to experimental work aimed at improving the quality of fruit. Undertaken by agricultural researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the approach has been shown to inhibit the malignant cancer cells without affecting normal cells and without the severe side effects of traditional treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.

The approach of the Hebrew University researchers is based on the actions of actibind, a protein that is produced by the black mould Aspergillus niger and that is a well-known microorganism used in bio and food technology. In plants, actibind binds actin, a major component of the intracellular structure in plants, interfering with the plants’ pollen tubes and halting cell growth.

Mold Education: Mold prevention strategies and possible health effects in the aftermath of hurricanes and major floods. National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USA. (Jun 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Extensive water damage after major hurricanes and floods increases the likelihood of mold contamination in buildings. This report provides information on how to limit exposure to mold and how to identify and prevent mold-related health effects. Where uncertainties in scientific knowledge exist, practical applications designed to be protective of a person's health are presented. Evidence is included about assessing exposure, clean-up and prevention, personal protective equipment, health effects, and public health strategies and recommendations. The recommendations assume that, in the aftermath of major hurricanes or floods, buildings wet for <48 hours will generally support visible and extensive mold growth and should be remediated, and excessive exposure to mold-contaminated materials can cause adverse health effects in susceptible persons regardless of the type of mold or the extent of contamination.
For the majority of persons, undisturbed mold is not a substantial health hazard. Mold is a greater hazard for persons with conditions such as impaired host defenses or mold allergies. To prevent exposure that could result in adverse health effects from disturbed mold, persons should 1) avoid areas where mold contamination is obvious; 2) use environmental controls; 3) use personal protective equipment; and 4) keep hands, skin, and clothing clean and free from mold-contaminated dust. Clinical evaluation of suspected mold-related illness should follow conventional clinical guidelines. In addition, in the aftermath of extensive flooding, health-care providers should be watchful for unusual mold-related diseases. The development of a public health surveillance strategy among persons repopulating areas after extensive flooding is recommended to assess potential health effects and the effectiveness of prevention efforts. Such a surveillance program will help CDC and state and local public health officials refine the guidelines for exposure avoidance, personal protection, and clean-up and assist health departments to identify unrecognized hazards.
Mold & Technology: Phosphorescent fungi and aflatoxin screening (RSC, UK - Jul 3, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Researchers in Spain have developed a quick and easy method to detect toxic Aspergillus fungi in contaminated food.

Alfredo Sanz-Medel and his colleagues at the University of Oviedo have produced a test that relies on room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and speeds up the testing from up to ten days to less than two.

Mold & Technology: Infra-red thermography latest weapon in detecting mold growth (Naples Daily News, FL - Jul 9, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Florida’s tropical climate is ideal for many full-time and part-time residents as well as vacationers. Unfortunately, it’s also the perfect climate for a not- so-welcome visitor: mold.
The business of detecting and eradicating mold in both residential and commercial buildings is growing rapidly in the Southwest Florida marketplace. While some companies only do visual inspections, one Estero-based firm has hired nationally-renowned mold experts and purchased the latest technology to allow them to detect what the eye cannot see.
