Researchers say black mold toxins could affect sense of smell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  March 3, 2006 - MSU researchers in the Center for Integrative Toxicology have found that certain toxins produced by black mold, that ubiquitous fungus found everywhere from damp basements to thousands of buildings in hurricane-ravaged New Orleans and the U.S. Gulf coast, are capable of killing nerve cells, essential for the sense of smell, that are located in the nasal passages of mice.
The scientific study – the first of its kind to investigate the potential harmful effects of inhaling mold toxins on the nasal passages – has been released on the prepublication Web site of the scientific journal, Environmental Health Perspectives, at www.ehponline.org . It also will be presented by MSU researchers at the Society of Toxicology annual meeting in San Diego in early March.

Orphan Formulation of Amphotericin B Prevents Fungal Lung Infections in High-Risk Patients (Medscape - Mar 2, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  The FDA approved in February orphan drug status for a new inhalation powder formulation of amphotericin B (made by Nektar Therapeutics) in the prevention of pulmonary fungal infections in patients at risk for aspergillosis due to immunosuppressive therapy.
According to a company news release, the product may potentially reduce the risk for aspergillosis as well as the subsequent high morbidity and mortality associated with the condition.

Governor's Mansion Mold Cleanup Should Have Cost Much Less (NBC 17.com, NC - Mar 2, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  RALEIGH, N.C. -- The multimillion-dollar project to rid North Carolina's governor's mansion of mold has wrapped up, but an NBC-17 investigation found the state was slow to fix the problem and knew about it years ago.
Next to the Biltmore Estate, the governor's mansion is probably North Carolina's second most famous home. But, the treasure was pretty much trashed just a few months ago.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  (WCCO) Imagine a home improvement that makes your house essentially worthless. It has happened to families in the Twin Cities, all because they were hoping to reduce airplane noise.
Relatively new windows have been installed to help reduce airplane noise. Outside, the window sills are so damp fungus grows in the middle of winter. What's inside the house is even worse and some are blaming the people who run the airport for the mess.

Dream home leads to Litigation Nightmare (Fayetteville Online, Fayetteville NC - Mar 5, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Jean Hutchinson expected to live the rest of her life in her new home. Instead, the house cost Hutchinson her health, she says. The house had water problems that were never adequately repaired, causing mold to grow in the crawl space, according to a lawsuit. The mold released toxins that made Hutchinson too sick to live in her home.
“There aren’t many days that I don’t fall asleep crying about it,†she said. Hutchinson is suing the house builder, Hornaday Construction Co., and two subcontractors, Suntree Landscaping Inc. and Cape Fear Air Conditioning and Heating Co. Inc.

Mold Education: Effect of chlorine dioxide gas on fungi and mycotoxins associated with sick building syndrome. (Wilson, S.C. et. al.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  The growth of indoor molds and their resulting products (e.g., spores and mycotoxins) can present health hazards for human beings. The efficacy of chlorine dioxide gas as a fumigation treatment for inactivating sick building syndrome-related fungi and their mycotoxins was evaluated. Filter papers (15 per organism) featuring growth of Stachybotrys chartarum, Chaetomium globosum, Penicillium chrysogenum, and Cladosporium cladosporioides were placed in gas chambers containing chlorine dioxide gas at either 500 or 1,000 ppm for 24 h. C. globosum was exposed to the gas both as colonies and as ascospores without asci and perithecia. After treatment, all organisms were tested for colony growth using an agar plating technique. Colonies of S. chartarum were also tested for toxicity using a yeast toxicity assay with a high specificity for trichothecene mycotoxins.
Results showed that chlorine dioxide gas at both concentrations completely inactivated all organisms except for C. globosum colonies which were inactivated an average of 89%. More than 99% of ascospores of C. globosum were nonculturable. For all ascospore counts, mean test readings were lower than the controls (P < 0.001), indicating that some ascospores may also have been destroyed. Colonies of S. chartarum were still toxic after treatment. These data show that chlorine dioxide gas can be effective to a degree as a fumigant for the inactivation of certain fungal colonies, that the perithecia of C. globosum can play a slightly protective role for the ascospores and that S. chartarum, while affected by the fumigation treatment, still remains toxic.

School Mold: Pasadena decides to fix moldy school (Pasadena Star-News, CA - Mar 4, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  PASADENA - School district officials have reversed their plans for the vacant Linda Vista Elementary School campus, opting to replace the roof rather than demolish the 20-year-old building.
It's a stopgap measure, Pasadena Unified School District officials said, to protect what they consider to be an asset for the district while they determine what to do with the property.

Mold & Health: Congress asked to help Katrina Recovery Workers (SunHerald.com, MS - Mar 4, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  WASHINGTON - Hurricane Katrina victims and civil rights advocates Friday made an emotional appeal to Congress to take action against federal agencies turning a blind eye to alleged human-rights violations by contractors.
At an Inter-American Commission on Human Rights hearing, civil rights advocates and Katrina victims told numerous stories of workers denied payments and forced to live in unsafe conditions by companies engaged in Katrina recovery.
