Good Morning,

This week's photo is of Penicillium spp. from the German version of Wikipedia. I'm not sure that the actual species is -- the caption says "bread mold", and that it was taken with a Scanning Electronic Microscope.

School Board member says: Send us your mold-sickness bills - Soriano says district could pay them (Seattle Post Intelligencer, WA - Jun 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Seattle Public Schools should pay the medical bills of students, teachers and other employees who've been sickened from exposure to mold or other environmental health hazards, School Board member Sally Soriano said yesterday.
"It's a drastic measure for a drastic situation," she said. Soriano called for the public to seek reimbursement after becoming convinced that the district is failing to adequately address health concerns over mold and asbestos.
Fighting Mold - Practical tips for freeing your home from mold from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC is Canada's national housing agency, like the FHA in the US) (Canada NewsWire, Canada - Jun 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you're like most homeowners, you want to know if mold you find inside your home is a problem. Mold of any type growing inside the home is undesirable, and can have potentially adverse affects on the health of your family, ranging from allergies to illness.

If your house is damp or has ever been flooded, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has a range of tips you can follow to find, identify and fight mold in your home, including:

Follow-Up -- More Amador Mold Debate: What is the debate over mold? (Amador Ledger-Dispatch, CA - Jun 8, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There seems to be a strong correlation between the subject of Indoor Air Quality and human emotions.
Recent editorials have called indoor air advocates "communist-environmentalists." They wage an emotional debate trying to defend mold in indoor spaces. But, what is the argument?
Follow-Up -- More Harvard School Mold: Teachers fear reprisals for mold complaints (Harvard Post, MA - Jun 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a recent interview a group of concerned elementary school teachers, including Diane Temple, a third-grade teacher and four others who wished their names to be withheld, said the lack of open dialogue about the mold issue and the opposing initiatives of the governing groups block any progress.

Temple commented, "If we can't openly talk about this, and know that everyone will support us, we're never going to solve the problem." The other teachers present agreed and observed that the fear of being ostracized by school staff may be keeping others from reporting their health problems. One teacher said, "It's very scary to step forward...and say this is an issue and it's not just me." When asked why they fear negative reaction from their peers, another said there is a prevalent attitude amongst school staff that the mold investigation is "...taking money from what could be programs or teaching positions."

Mold Allergy a Greater Health Concern Than Toxic Mold - Mold Usually Harmful Only in Large Concentrations to Allergic Individuals (allergies.about.com - Jun 8, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mold is normally present in all homes, but is usually harmful only in large concentrations to allergic or sensitive individuals according to a report published in the March 2005 Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.
"Although toxic mold has received much media attention lately, toxic reactions caused by fungal exposure have not been found to be a significant health problem," said lead author Jay M. Portnoy, The Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. "The more common household molds, when in the presence of moisture, can proliferate and cause problems and health effects that are generally due to allergy or irritation to fungal substances."
FEMA, Insurers, Adjusters Charged in Md. Lawsuit by Isabel Flood Victims (Insurance Journal - Jun 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More than 140 victims of the 2003 tropical storm Isabel are suing Homeland Security Undersecretary Michael Brown, David Maurstad, who runs the National Flood Insurance Program, 17 insurance companies and others charging that these officials conspired and knowingly paid claimants far less they deserved to repair their flooded homes and properties.

The NFIP insureds' lawsuit, which also cites Computer Sciences Corporation and independent insurance adjusting firms, was filed June 8 in United States District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, alleging that the group conspired to defraud thousands of catastrophe victims who had purchased flood insurance through the federal flood program.

Mold Education: Fighting Mold - The Homeowners' Guide from the CMHC
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (Canada's national housing authority) guide to indoor mold. In scope, it's equivalent to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines on mold in homes, although the recommendations are not all the same.
There are some key differences in the CMHC'S guidelines:
  • CMHC licenses its indoor air quality inspectors -- they are Residential Indoor Air Quality Investigators
  • Bleach as a remediation method IS NOT recommended.
  • Moldy drywall should be remediated by a mold clean-up contractor.
School Mold: Schools to get rid of mold and asbestos (Seattle Times, WA - Jun 11, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Crews plan to replace about 1,600 ceiling tiles and pieces of plasterboard at Nathan Hale High School after a leaky roof led to mold growth. They also will try to get rid of pooled water under a classroom at Arbor Heights Elementary School after earlier attempts failed.

Many other schools could be added to the work list as the district completes a survey measuring the quality of indoor air at its nearly 100 schools.

Mold & Science: University Study Shows Ionic Silver Effective Against SARS; Supports Previous Research Findings on SARS Virus [also mold] (Business Wire, CA - June 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WAKEFIELD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2005--AgION Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of engineered antimicrobial solutions, today announced that its research efforts have demonstrated that ionic silver was found to effectively deactivate the human coronavirus strain 229E, a virus linked to SARS, during a laboratory study conducted by the University of Arizona.
The study, led by C.P. Gerba, Ph.D. and K.R. Bright, Ph.D., tested various ionic silver and copper levels to determine if they were effective against the human coronavirus strain 229E, a strain commonly used as a surrogate for the SARS virus in laboratory research. The research demonstrated significant reductions of the virus within 1 hour (90 percent) and reduced virus levels to below the detection limit following 24 hours of exposure (99.99 percent).
Mold & Insurance: The Most Expensive States To Insure Your Home 2005 (Forbes - Jun 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Texas is tops--at least when it comes to homeowners' insurance costs.

You might guess that California, where houses go skidding down mountains, are torched by wildfires or get rattled by earthquakes, would be the most expensive place to insure a house. Or Florida, which was hammered by no fewer than four major hurricanes last year.

Planning for Mold: LVI Services, National Environmental Restoration Firm, Says Florida Business and Commercial Property Owners Should Consider Pre-Negotiating for Emergency Response (Capitol Reports, CA - Jun 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TAMPA, FL (06/08/05) -- LVI Services, one of the nation's largest environmental services and restoration firms with 25 offices across the country including two in Florida, recommends that business and commercial property owners establish a relationship with a disaster response provider long before a disaster or emergency occurs.
Negotiating a "pre-event contract" gives both the contractor and property owner time to address issues such as insurance, pricing, labor, response and equipment rates before the services are actually needed. Based on LVI's experience with hurricane recovery in Florida last year and other emergency response situations, a pre-event contract enables the parties to become familiar with each other, and establishes important base lines and ground rules -- giving property owners peace of mind even if a disaster or emergency unfolds.
For Fun: Did I Just Feel an Earthquake? US Geological Survey
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Or -- considering what's been happening lately -- maybe not so fun . . . wondering if you felt an earthquake? Here in California, it's not really a question of "if" but where, and how big.

This is really a neat site -- information is posted really quickly, within a few minutes, complete with location, maps, and estimated magnitude. Within an hour, they have the actual magnitude reviewed by a seismologist. The USGS also asks for surveys from folks who felt the shaking. It's fun to see what your neighbors fel.t
