Houston homebuilder Bob Perry leads all givers so far this year to the Republican Governors Association. Gov. Rick Perry (no relation) is finance chair of the GOP group. According to the latest report, homebuilder Perry gave $500,000 to the RGA in February. There's probably more where that came from - and if the past is any indication, Gov. Perry will be a beneficiary in the fall election.
Four years ago, homebuilder Perry put $1 million into the Republican Governors Association, which then contributed $1 million to Gov. Rick Perry's reelection campaign. Last year, when Perry was chairman of the governor's group, Bob Perry escalated his giving to the RGA -- $2 million. The RGA stayed out of the Republican primary in Texas, although it will be free to give to Perry and his GOP brethren in the fall. The governor has been a key supporter of Bob Perry-backed initiatives - including limits on lawsuits against business and creation of an agency that critics say was designed to protect homebuilders. The Legislature has voted to abolish the agency. Bob Perry made headlines recently when a jury awarded $58 million to a retirement-age Mansfield couple over a defective Perry-built home that the homebuilder has refused for a decade to fix.
