Saturday, 29 September 2007

Erin Brockovich Here To Help Westcott Plantation
“They've asked for help-they're sick, we're finding contaminants and somebody needs to give them some answers,” Brockovich pleads. Brockovich says testing at Wescott has shown higher than allowed levels of chemical compounds, mostly Benzene, a colorless and flammable liquid that used to be added to gasoline. Now she says that compound can be found underneath people's homes in levels more than 70 times the EPA allowed amount.

Charleston, SC - Environmental activist Erin Brockovich visits the Lowcountry giving a voice to Wescott Plantation home owners

Brockovitch is helping at least 8 Wescott families in a legal dispute with home builder Lennar.

She says those 8 families that came forward are complaining about their health.

They say they have chronic fatigue, head aches and nausea.

Brockovich says someone needs to respond to these problems, mostly Lennar.

The movie made her a household name now Erin Brockovich is here to help Wescott Plantation homeowners speak up about what's ailing them.

“If the EPA comes in a gets a guideline for a chemical in the home at elevated levels that guideline is there for a reason and it should prompt a response,” adds Brockovich.

Homebuilder Lennar says they have responded by buying back one home that was plagued with problems and venting another.

They say Wescott Plantation doesn't have an issue with Benzene or anything else.“They're all A-OK the CDC website - news ) has reviewed the tests done by Lennar and the EPA.

They have found no ill health effect of health risk whatsoever on Wescott Plantation,” says Lennar’s Division President Robert Hilliard.

Brockovitch also says two landfills are located less than a mile from Wescott Plantation.

Her legal team is trying to find out of those landfills could be a source of the problem at Westcott.

Robert Hilliard from Lennar says no questionable sites showed up on an environmental inspection done before building began.
