TEXAS WATCH MEDIA RELEASE - Supreme Court and Perry Homes Money

Hecht Should Recuse Himself from Perry Homes Case and Reveal the Full List of Donors to His Legal Defense
The Dallas Morning News reported this morning that Hillco PAC, which has received more than $1 million from Houston homebuilder Bob Perry, gave Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht $16,000 in the days after Hecht solicited contributions to cover his legal expenses....“Justice Hecht should come clean once and for all by revealing the names of everyone who is picking up the tab for his legal bills,” said Winslow.  “At the very least, this calls Justice Hecht’s impartiality into question.  He should recuse himself from any case involving individuals who have contributed to his personal legal defense.”

Hecht Should Recuse Himself from Perry Homes Case and Reveal the Full List of Donors to His Legal Defense

AUSTIN – Given new information that Justice Nathan Hecht accepted contributions from mega-builder Bob Perry’s lobbyists, Texas Watch called on Hecht to recuse himself from a landmark decision involving Perry Homes .

“Nathan Hecht should recuse himself from the Perry Homes case and any other case involving parties who have contributed to his personal legal defense,” said Alex Winslow, Executive Director of Texas Watch, a statewide consumer advocacy organization which monitors the Texas Supreme Court.  “It would be wholly inappropriate for Hecht to stand in judgment of someone who is paying his personal expenses.”

The Dallas Morning News reported this morning that Hillco PAC, which has received more than $1 million from Houston homebuilder Bob Perry, gave Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht $16,000 in the days after Hecht solicited contributions to cover his legal expenses.[1]

Just weeks after the donations, Justice Hecht heard oral arguments in a high-profile case involving Perry Homes .[2]

This new information confirms what advocacy groups have suspected all along: Nathan Hecht took special interest lobby money from parties with business pending before his court to pay for his personal legal expenses.

Hecht refuses to reveal the names of those who have contributed to his personal legal defense.[3]

“Justice Hecht should come clean once and for all by revealing the names of everyone who is picking up the tab for his legal bills,” said Winslow.  “At the very least, this calls Justice Hecht’s impartiality into question.  He should recuse himself from any case involving individuals who have contributed to his personal legal defense.”
