Mold may make asthma worse, EPA and CDC say (Arizona Daily Star, AZ - Sep 10, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there is some evidence that mold can worsen asthma. However, most of the time, studies have shown that people who are sensitive to mold generally only suffer short-term nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation.
Tucson attorney Harold Hyams, who is suing Wasatch Property Management Co., says mold has been linked to illness for more than 3,600 years. He says dozens of studies and articles back him up.
Lawsuit on mold is in shambles - Plaintiffs' counsel held in contempt, is fined $20,000 (Arizona Daily Star, AZ - Sep 10, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When the Bullis, Worden and Foulkes families joined another dozen families and sued the owners and managers of their East Side apartment complex, they were confident they'd win.
They thought they had doctors and scientists on their side, a passionate, hard-working attorney and, it seemed, common sense.

As awareness of mold's hazards grows, so do building counter methods (San Francisco Chronicle, USA - Sep 9, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It's been more than a year since Hurricane Katrina slammed New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Initial devastation was the result of wind, rain and rising floodwaters. But as the waters receded, a more insidious invader took hold of the structures of the Big Easy -- mold.
National news coverage featured homeowners and renters alike salvaging their possessions from mold- infested buildings. Mold remediation in the area has to be nothing short of epic.
Bianca Jagger fined for withholding rent over mold issue (Houston Chronicle, United States - Sep 7, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ NEW YORK â A judge has ordered Bianca Jagger, former wife of Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, to pay a $500 fine for failing to pay rent on a Park Avenue apartment that she says is infested with toxic mold and unlivable and has made her sick.
State Supreme Court Justice Leland DeGrasse imposed the fine after citing Jagger for contempt of court. He said she was "willfully disobeying the explicit directives of two prior court orders requiring Jagger to pay rent" while her case was pending.

Cleaning mold from school includes many hidden costs (BurlingtonFreePress.com, VT - Sep 10, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An outbreak of mold in a Milton school is forcing administrators to deal with many issues concerning the school building that have long been ignored, said school Superintendent Holden Waterman. Although the Schoolboard has approved $500,000 to use to remove the mold, Waterman said it's possible that much more will be necessary, depending on the repairs that are needed.
Seven roof leaks have been identified, he said, and the eaves that are supposed to help drain water from the roof don't work well, causing water to stream onto the school's brick walls and promoting mold growth inside and outside the building. Outside, water pools near the building, encouraging mold, Waterman said.
Judgment for Builder Rendered in Mold Bodily Injury Lawsuit (Yahoo! News - Sep 7, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LOS ANGELES, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Shea Homes was absolved of any liability for damages that a Stevenson Ranch family alleged had arisen out of mold exposure in their home. Jurors in the closely watched personal injury suit returned a defense verdict for Shea, the nation's largest private home builder, following a three week trial. The family of three claimed a host of bodily injuries from exposure to mold while living in a single family home that Shea had constructed. Although homeowners have asserted many claims for mold-caused damages, few have reached trial and yielded verdicts.
In this case, the Achin family sought in excess of $20 million (reduced to $5 million at trial) for various personal injuries. Prior to trial, the court eliminated many of their claims, finding that the general medical community has rejected any link between household mold and injuries other than typical allergic reactions in otherwise healthy people. After trial, the jury returned its verdict that Shea was not negligent, made no misrepresentations of fact and did not cause any harm to plaintiffs. The jury further found that Shea acted reasonably in responding to the family's initial warranty requests, and that the claims asserted were wholly unrelated to any actions of Shea. Several jurors commented post-trial that they thought Shea had done everything it could to work with the Achin family and avoid the litigation that transpired.

Mold Education: Brain abscess due to Scedosporium apiospermum in a non immunocompromised child. (Indian J Med Microbiol. 2006 Jul;24(3):231-2)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scedosporium apiospermum is a filamentous fungi that commonly causes cutaneous infection. In certain circumstances, S. apiospermum can also cause invasive disease, which can involve the central nervous system (CNS). When the CNS becomes involved, treatment is difficult, therapeutic options are limited and the prognosis is poor. Early identification and treatment can decrease the mortality rate.
Here we present a case of brain abscess with chronic suppurative otitis media, caused by S. apiospermum. This is the first such case report from Nepal. We could identify the organism only post mortem. We could not save the patient, probably due to delay in diagnosis.
Mold Education: Assessment of microbial exposure risks from handling of biofuel wood chips and straw--effect of outdoor storage. (Ann Agric Environ Med. 2006;13(1):139-45)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Handling of biofuels may release dust particles containing high concentrations of Hazardous microorganisms, thus representing a potential occupational health problem. We analysed the microbial dustiness of baled straw (cultivated both conventionally and ecologically) and of wood chips from piles that had been stored outdoors for up to 11 months by using total spore counting, cultivation, and measuring of endotoxin and chemical markers of fungal biomass, lipopolysaccharide, and peptidoglycan. The bacterial dustiness of straw was much greater than of wood chips whereas the fungal dustiness did not differ much.
In general, samples taken from the inner part of each biofuel material were dustier than samples taken from the surface, except for fungal and bacterial biomass in wood chips and total fungi and fungal biomass in ecological straw. A considerable increase of bacterial dustiness occurred during storage over summer. Dust from ecological straw contained considerably less of bacterial components than from conventional straw and, in addition, exhibited a less pronounced increase upon storage over summer. In summary, biofuels represent sustainable energy resources of growing economic importance but may at the same time pose significant health problems. We found that storage of biofuels outdoors over summer increased the microbiological dustiness and should therefore be avoided, and that ecological straw contained less of microbe-containing dust than conventional straw and should be preferred since it reduces the exposure to harmful microbiological agents.

Mold & Technology: Detoxification for Toxic Exposure and Pollution (PR Web, WA - Sep 10, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) September 10, 2006 -- Groundbreaking detoxification protocol saved firemen's lives who were involved in the clean up after the events of September 11th in New York City. The New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project (www.nydetox.org) evaluated 286 firemen and rescue workers in 2004 who were treated with intensive sauna treatments, exercise and nutraceuticals. On average the treatment reduced pollutant levels 65% and improved neurological, muscle and lung symptoms completely in three out of four cases.
"The detoxification protocol is effective because it greatly increases the movement of long life chemicals from the body by increasing all aspects of the body's natural detoxification mechanisms and metabolism. Foreign chemicals interfere with the normal function of the immune, hormone and nervous system, the detox restores the natural balance of these systems by eliminating fat-soluble chemicals from the body," according to Dr. James Dahlgren, world renowned toxicologist and internist.
Mold & Technology: Substance protects against fire and mold (The Marshall Democrat-News, MO - Sep 7, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ City, health, real estate and insurance representatives were on hand Tuesday, Sept. 5, at a construction site in Marshall for a demonstration of No-Burn, a substance designed to protect buildings from fire and mold, according to a distributor of the product.
Marc Cochrane of North Industries Company used a small dog house he and his son built to demonstrate the product's effectiveness against flames. His daughter painted both clear, absorbent No-Burn on the interior and a No-Burn primer paint on the roof.
