Angry condo buyers take developers to court
With once-hot condominium markets across the country in sharp decline, angry buyers are taking developers to court, alleging everything from breach of contract to fraud...In Florida, for example, 2,557 individual complaints against developers were filed in fiscal year 2006, which ended June 30, up from 1,825 two years ago, according to the state's Department of Business and Professional Regulation. |

With more than $1,000,000 in claims from 134 victims, investigators say Coral Bay Homes could be the largest home building scheme in Florida...While a bulk of the complaints of unfinished homes came from Hernando County, Coral Bay Homesâ collapse has left victims across the state and the world. Construction company president charged
Steven Bartlett, the president of Coral Bay Construction in Spring Hill, has been arrested on grand theft charges for allegedly spending money on himself that was supposed to be used to build houses. Foreclosures biting more homeowners
As of Oct. 3, the county had 7,339 foreclosures, which eclipses last year's total of 7,132, according to Woodlands-based Foreclosure Information & Listing Service...The reasons, according to experts, include overextended borrowers, lax lending practices and rising interest rates...The 27-year-old contractor, who was recently notified that his lender had begun foreclosure proceedings, stopped making mortgage payments in March because rising property taxes made the home unaffordable. |

Contractor, Couple Reach Accord
In August, Brooks' license was suspended for 60 days by the board to address complaints concerning workmanship, financial mismanagement and not honoring a warranty...The complaint first came to the board in June, along with a complaint from John Van Meter, Brook's next-door neighbor. That complaint was dismissed, but the Todds have said three other families have also complained about the builder, but haven't filed official complaints with the county yet. |

Rapid growth is a big issue across the Bay area, and it's causing growing pains from Citrus to Manatee counties. Single-family homes are popping up like daffodils in spring as more people head north of Tampa Bay. According to Hernando County's building department, permits for single-family homes have more than doubled since last year. |

After struggling home builder Jade Homes suddenly closed its doors last month, buyers of about 75 homes found themselves in difficult straits... Shawn Stumpf, his wife, Kristy, and their two small children expected to soon move into their new Jade home in North Port. They sold their former house last year to make the $50,000 deposit on a $326,000 Jade house at 1733 Kadashow Drive. The Stumpfs are now living with Shawn Stumpf's mother. |

Trusted home builder sentenced for swindling
Upscale home builder Steven Sanfilippo was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for bilking customers and subcontractors out of nearly $800,000. The Santa Rosa County courtroom where he was sentenced was nearly filled with supporters and a number of his victims. A jury convicted Sanfilippo, 46, in April of more than two dozen counts of theft, fraud and racketeering. |

Fifteen months ago, Jason and Heather Wells signed over their life savings to have a dream home built in a brand-new Apopka subdivision...The Orlando builder who had taken their $75,000 down payment -- and had no black marks with city officials or the local Better Business Bureau -- also withdrew about $100,000 from the couple's construction loan with a local bank. Still, nothing...The suspect: Barrington Homes Inc., a 4-year-old company whose two principals, John and Deanna Barrington, have been arrested on federal conspiracy and fraud charges... Customers briefed by federal investigators say an estimated $5 million to $10 million is missing... What the Wellses -- and the bank -- didn't know was that John Barrington was a convicted felon known as John Jakows, who had changed his last name in state court to hide his criminal past. |
