Governor's Mansion Mold Cleanup Should Have Cost Much Less
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The multimillion-dollar project to rid North Carolina's governor's mansion of mold has wrapped up, but an NBC-17 investigation found the state was slow to fix the problem and knew about it years ago. Next to the Biltmore Estate, the governor's mansion is probably North Carolina's second most famous home. But, the treasure was pretty much trashed just a few months ago.

Mold spawning litigation
Mold litigation is more than a decade old, but it picked up steam after 2000. A spate of high-profile cases and large awards attracted media attention, which in turn created public awareness leading to more litigation... The largest recent case concluded in October 2005 in California when a lumber company settled with a plaintiff for $13 million. That combined with settlements from co-defendants brought the case's total to $23 million. In 2003, a class-action suit in Washington state against a paint maker ended with a $55 million settlement for 5,000 state residents and a $107.5 million settlement for national members of the class.

Fox News employees sue over alleged mold
Two Fox News employees have filed a lawsuit alleging they were sickened by toxic molds and pesticides in a building where some of the network's top shows are produced. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Supreme Court in Manhattan, alleges the employees fell ill in the building where "The O'Reilly Factor" and "At Large with Geraldo Rivera" are produced, as well as "Hannity and Colmes" and "Dayside." It seeks unspecified damages from Fox News and the building's management company.

The number of lawsuits involving mold have exploded in the past few years. But the settlement in a recent California case is the first of its kind.   Experts told them that some of the lumber used to construct their house was moldy. That mold grew and seeped through the walls and the floors and exposed the family to an organic toxic mold they believe was responsible for damaging Kellen's brain.
