Good Morning,

I'm sure everyone has been wondering about the lack of Monday Morning Mold (now Mycology) issues in the last month, especially with so many interesting developments, such as the Katrina Cough, and a settlement in a California mold case of over $20 million dollars. Well, the reason was that I had a Stage III Malignant Melanoma that was diagnosed at the end of September. I had surgery on November 2, and the great news is that it had not spread and I will recover from the cancer completely. The bad news is that I did develop a Staphylococcus aureus infection (commonly called a staph infection) shortly after the surgery and had to be hospitalized again. No, the bacteria wasn't antibiotic resistant -- but I am. I found out I am allergic to Penicillin (derived from the fungus Penicillium chrysogenum). I'm taking other antibiotics and I am recovering.

In honor of my newly-discovered allergy, this week's photo is of Penicillium chrysogenum (formerly, Penicillium notatum) from the La Tercera Icarito website (kind of a Spanish equivalent to Wikkipedia).

Manhattan Beach Family Settles Mold Suit for $22.6 million suit - Parents contend toxic growth on wood supplied by a Gardena lumberyard caused son's brain damage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kellen Gorman A Manhattan Beach couple who claim their son suffered brain damage from toxic mold in their home reached a record $22.6 million settlement with the Gardena lumberyard that supplied the wood and 16 other defendants, it was announced Friday.
Parents Gary and Dana Gorman said Kellen, now 5, became ill because of mold on framing studs that had been improperly stored by Crenshaw Lumber, which agreed to pay the bulk of the settlement -- $13 million. Despite the settlement, the company's owners continue to deny the charge.
Katrina Cough: Hurricane Katrina leaves behind a cough as well as destruction (News-Medical.net, World - Nov 7, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the wake of hurricane Katrina some survivors have developed a cough now dubbed 'Katrina Cough'.

A combination of the weather, dust from reconstruction and mould are thought to be causing the problem.

More Katrina Cough: 'Katrina Cough' Floats Around - The storm's residual mold and muck may be causing respiratory illnesses in people who have returned home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEW ORLEANS — A large number of people along the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts are developing a condition that some have dubbed "Katrina cough," believed to be linked to mold and dust circulating after Hurricane Katrina. Health officials say they are trying to determine how widespread the problem is. There are suggestions that it is popping up regularly among people who have returned to storm-ravaged areas, particularly New Orleans.
Dr. Dennis Casey, one of the few ear, nose and throat doctors seeing patients in New Orleans, called the condition "very prevalent." And Dr. Kevin Jordan, director of medical affairs at Touro Infirmary and Memorial Medical Center in downtown New Orleans, said the hospital had seen at least a 25% increase in complaints regarding sinus headaches, congestion, runny noses and sore throats since Katrina.
Manchester VA Mold Sickens Woman, Suit Alleges (Style Weekly, VA - Nov 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Richmond woman who purchased a condominium in the Old Manchester Lofts has filed suit against developer Robin Miller and the property’s owners, alleging her $220,000 loft was contaminated with lead and mold. In the suit, filed in Richmond Circuit Court Oct. 21, Resa Jones alleges that Miller and the property owners lied to her about damage to the condo during Hurricane Gaston in August 2004 and tried to conceal the subsequent mold problems. She is asking for $2.5 million plus punitive damages.

Miller, a prominent Richmond developer, says Jones’ allegations are unfounded. After she complained, Miller says, he offered to buy back Jones’ condo, but she wouldn’t agree. The amount she’s demanding in court is “totally inappropriate,” he says, “so it’s a matter of principle to me now.”

State warns of flood-damaged cars (Boston Globe, United States - Nov 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CONCORD, N.H. --The attorney general's office is trying to prevent residents from buying cars damaged by the hurricanes.
Attorney General Kelly Ayotte said Hurricanes Katrina and Rita may have damaged 500,000 vehicles, which could be cleaned up and moved to other states for sale. She said flood damage could cause problems with brakes, air bags, computers or other systems.
Mold Education: Mold & Autism - An infection-based model of neurodevelopmental damage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Editor's Comment: There are not many peer- reviewed published articles that discuss any possible relationship between fungi and autism. Of those published articles, there are very few that I can provide you access to without violating copyright laws. Here is one of the more interesting ones that I can give you.]

Perinatal exposure to infectious agents and toxins is linked to the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders, but the mechanisms by which environmental triggers interact with developing immune and neural elements to create neurodevelopmental disturbances are poorly understood. We describe a model for investigating disorders of central nervous system development based on neonatal rat infection with Borna disease virus, a neurotropic noncytolytic RNA virus. Infection results in abnormal righting reflexes, hyperactivity, inhibition of open-field exploration, and stereotypic behaviors. Architecture is markedly disrupted in hippocampus and cerebellum, with reduction in granule and Purkinje cell numbers. Neurons are lost predominantly by apoptosis, as supported by increased mRNA levels for pro-apoptotic products (Fas, caspase-1), decreased mRNA levels for the anti-apoptotic bcl-x, and in situ labeling of fragmented DNA. Although inflammatory infiltrates are observed transiently in frontal cortex, glial activation (microgliosis > astrocytosis) is prominent throughout the brain and persists for several weeks in concert with increased levels of proinflammatory cytokine mRNAs (interleukins 1, 1, and 6 and tumor necrosis factor ) and progressive hippocampal and cerebellar damage. The resemblance of these functional and neuropathologic abnormalities to human neurodevelopmental disorders suggests the utility of this model for defining cellular, biochemical, histologic, and functional outcomes of interactions of environmental influences with the developing central nervous system.

School Mold: Fungus invades Clovis, NM High School classrooms (Clovis News Journal, NM - Nov 2, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Behind the walls of Clovis High School Building E, black fungi flourish, dotting cabinets and once-hidden surfaces. The building was closed in September after teachers complained of a pungent stench. Construction revealed extensive water damage caused by a leaky roof and the building will not be ready for occupancy until next school year, school officials said.
School officials said the building will undergo an air quality test once construction is complete.
Court Mold: Arkansas County, AR courthouse cleanup commences (DeWitt Era-Enterprise, AR - Nov 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the aftermath of Hurricane Rita struck DeWitt in September, the worst damage happened right on Court Square, as the Arkansas County Courthouse developed leaks which caused damage on all three floors. Contractors and courthouse staff will be spending the rest of November getting all the repairs completed.

When the storm struck, the roof of the Arkansas County Courthouse developed a serious leak, with about three inches of water building up on the third floor of the courthouse. It leaked down to the second and first floors, causing major damage to Arkansas County Judge Glenn “Sonny” Cox’s office and County Clerk Aline Ellenberg’s office.

Mold & Insurance & Legislation: Louisianna Senator wants more insurance information - Introduces Bill to Require Special Mold Endorsement/Waiver Form
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the hurricanes, many homeowners complained that they didn't know about clauses in their insurance policies or about the other types of insurance coverage available to them. Two bills approved Wednesday by a Senate committee would give people more information.
Senate Bill 55 by Sen. Robert Adley, D-Benton, would require insurers to notify buyers on a separate form whether the insurance policy includes coverage for flooding or mold damage and whether the deductible rises for hurricane damage.
Mold & Litigation: Firefighters win suit over mold at work (Ashland City Times, TN - Nov 5, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two firefighters and their wives were awarded $76,000 by a judge after claiming that mold in a West End fire station made them sick.

Chris Berry, who retired with a disability pension, and Roy Johnson, who still works for the department, claimed that they were sick because of mold growing rampant at the hall. Metro had argued that the men's illnesses were because of pre-existing conditions and not caused by the relatively low levels of mold.

Mold & Biotechnology: Could a House Plant Clean the Air? As English ivy climbs, airborne contaminants fall, study finds. (ABC News - Nov 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
THURSDAY, Nov. 10 (HealthDay News) — Want a great, green way to clean the air in your house? A new study by a California teenager suggests that a not-so-usual suspect — the English ivy plant — might be just the ticket.
Ryan Kim, the son of an allergy researcher, found that an English ivy plant does a significant job of cleansing the air of mold particles and other nasty particulates, including canine fecal matter.
Mold & Technology: Free Home energy audits can help save money on heating costs, identify mold problems (West Salem Coulee News, WI - Nov 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Heating a home this winter might seem like a bear of a task, but that doesn’t mean homeowners have to hibernate through the winter. One step homeowners can take to increase the energy efficiency in their homes is to take part in Home Performance with Energy Star. The energy efficiency program is sponsored by Focus on Energy, Wisconsin’s energy efficiency and renewable energy initiative.

“The goal is to bring the best technology and knowledge to the existing houses and measure how the houses are actually working,” said Tom Wilson. Wilson has been doing home energy audits since 1974 and is a building performance specialist with the Home Performance program.

We have a full understanding of the requirements outlined in CERCLA, RCRA, NEPA, TSCA, AHERA and HUD, as well as other federal, state and local environmental regulations.

Moisture Control is the key for microbial management. Moisture in buildings can be in the form of water vapor or as a liquid. The presence of moisture on the surface of building materials or inside structural components is the primary factor in sustaining microbial growth, which may lead to exposure to microbial emissions of spores and their metabolites, such as particle-containing mycotoxins and microbial Volatile organic compounds (mVOCs).
