OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska's attorney general Thursday charged an Omaha homebuilder with overbilling a family by $60,000.
Tim Brummels of D&R Builders is charged with three counts of theft by deception, three counts of second-degree forgery, and two counts of issuing a bad check.
"Mr. Brummels' actions are unacceptable," said Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning. "Our investigation found he overbilled and double-billed his clients, and in some cases, created invoices out of thin air."
The case against Brummels involves three homes built by the contractor. The investigation began in October 2005 after the Attorney General's Office was contacted by a private investigator.
Bruning said that Brummels "preyed on honest, hard-working Nebraskans."
The charges against Brummels are felonies. Each count is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The minimum penalty is one year in prison.
