Fungus leads to coughing up blood (Sarasota Herald-Tribune, FL - Feb 8, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Dr. Donohue: About four months ago, I started coughing up flecks of blood. My doctor put me on antibiotics for bronchitis. They didn't do any good. I went to a lung doctor, who made the diagnosis of aspergillosis. By this time the blood had disappeared, and the doctor said not to do anything at the present. Is that the usual treatment of this infection? -- A.K.
Dear A.K.: If ever there were a fungus that fit the saying "there's a fungus among us," it has to be Aspergillus. It's everywhere -- in decaying vegetation, in soil, in food, in water and in the air. No one on planet Earth escapes contact with it. However, it causes trouble only in a very few.
Nancy Davis Follow Up: Mold house survivors to get their day in court on April 5 (Nashua Free Press - Feb 3, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PEPPERELL -- Nearly three years to the day one couple purchased a duplex at 20A and B Shawnee Rd. only to lose it, their health and all their possessions, they said, to toxic mold. Now, Nancy and Rick Davis will have their day in court on April 5.

Their lawsuit against the two Realtors involved in the sale of the allegedly mold-infested duplex and the realty firms they work for will go before a 10- to 14- person Lowell Superior Court jury on that date, said Nancy Davis.

Corn Mold Toxin (Fumonisins) Linked to Birth Defects (HealthCentral.com - Feb 9, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tortillas made with corn containing a toxic mold may have been responsible for a rash of serious birth defects in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas during the early 1990s, says a report in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.
For more than a decade, scientists have been trying to determine the cause of the surge of infants born with damaged or missing brains. No chemical links to the affected babies were ever proven.
Aflatoxin, Fumonisins Awareness Helps Prevent Future Problems (AgNews, TX - Jan 24, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AMARILLO – The livestock feeding industry in the High Plains is on the lookout for high aflatoxin concentrations in imported grain, according to a local plant pathologist.

Greta Schuster, Texas Cooperative Extension plant pathologist, explained the situation at the High Plains Grain Elevator workshop here.

Mold and Illness (DailyIndia.com, NY - Feb 8, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Molds and fungus are nearby virtually everywhere we go. For the most part these molds are relatively innocuous. Certain molds, however, do pose substantial health risks. According to Berlin D. Nelson, Ph.D., department of plant pathology, North Dakota State University, Stachybotrys Chartarum or “black mold” is the most prominent and notorious of the toxic molds.
Black mold is a heavy producer of mycotoxins (toxins created by a fungus). These mycotoxins cause a wide range of symptoms from headaches to flu-like symptoms, and chronic illnesses. The mycotoxins created by black mold are numerous, but fall into 3 main categories: Macrocyclic Trichothecenes, which inhibit protein synthesis; Phenylspirodrimanes and Cyclsporine, which are strong immunosuppressive agents; and Stachylysin, which can lyse erythrocytes (destroy red blood cells). With all three groups present there is little wonder why mycotoxicosis (mycotoxin poisoning) caused by black mold can lead to severe degradation in human health.
Mold Education: Exposure to Fumonisins and the Occurrence of Neural Tube Defects along the Texas-Mexico Border (Environmental Health Perspectives Volume 114, Number 2, February 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Abstract Along the Texas-Mexico border, the prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) among Mexican-American women doubled during 1990-1991. The human outbreak began during the same crop year as epizootics attributed to exposure to fumonisin, a mycotoxin that often contaminates corn. Because Mexican Americans in Texas consume large quantities of corn, primarily in the form of tortillas, they may be exposed to high levels of fumonisins. We examined whether or not maternal exposure to fumonisins increases the risk of NTDs in offspring using a population-based case-control study. We estimated fumonisin exposure from a postpartum sphinganine:sphingosine (sa:so) ratio, a biomarker for fumonisin exposure measured in maternal serum, and from maternal recall of periconceptional corn tortilla intake.

After adjusting for confounders, moderate (301-400) compared with low (¡Ü 100) consumption of tortillas during the first trimester was associated with increased odds ratios (ORs) of having an NTD- affected pregnancy (OR = 2.4; 95% confidence interval, 1.1-5.3). No increased risks were observed at intakes higher than 400 tortillas (OR = 0.8 for 401- 800, OR = 1.0 for > 800). Based on the postpartum sa:so ratio, increasing levels of fumonisin exposure were associated with increasing ORs for NTD occurrences, except for the highest exposure category (sa:so > 0.35). Our findings suggest that fumonisin exposure increases the risk of NTD, proportionate to dose, up to a threshold level, at which point fetal death may be more likely to occur. These results also call for population studies that can more directly measure individual fumonisin intakes and assess effects on the developing embryo. Key words: case-control study, corn, fumonisins, Mexican Americans, mycotoxins, neural tube defects. Environ Health Perspect 114:237-241 (2006).

School Mold: Liberty, NY school mold problem not severe, experts say (Times Herald-Record, NY - Feb 15, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Liberty - A pair of building consultants say Liberty's school buildings are wet, but there isn't a lot of mold.
An audience of about 50 listened as they said this at Monday night's school board meeting, but many in the crowd viewed the report - ostensibly good news - with suspicion.
Mold Litigation: Settlement reached in Hilton mold suit - Hilton is settling with one of the builders of the Kalia Tower
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Closing a chapter in a torturous legal war over a mold problem that temporarily shut down a $95 million tower at one of Waikiki's landmark properties, Hilton Hotels Corp. has reached a settlement with a contractor of the Kalia Tower at the Hilton Hawaiian Village

Hilton is scheduled to appear in state court today to seek approval of a settlement with the Erection Co. Inc., which was involved in the construction of the tower, including steel construction in the stairwells.

Mold & Litigation: Riverside sues to clean up building - Arcade Antiques flood at root of controversy (Riverside Brookfield Landmark, IL - Feb 14, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Village of Riverside last Friday filed a civil complaint in the Cook County Circuit Court against the management and owners of the Tower Building, a 78-year-old commercial/apartment at the corner of Forest and East Avenues in downtown Riverside.
The Tudor-revival style Tower Building is a Riverside landmark, receiving that designation from the village’s board of trustees in 1993.
Mold & Taxes: Can you deduct for uninsured casualty losses? (Miami Herald, FL - Jan 29, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Regrettably, 2005 was a record year for both insured and uninsured real and personal property losses. Hurricanes, floods, firestorms and other ''sudden, unusual or unexpected'' events caused millions of dollars of uninsured losses.

For example, the thousands of homeowners who lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina and Rita due to flooding, but who didn't have flood insurance, will be able to deduct most of their losses on their income tax returns.

Mold Certification: SPECIAL REPORT: New Certification Aims to Reduce Risk from Mold (Commercial Property News - Feb 6, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Greenguard Environmental Institute yesterday unveiled a certification program to evaluate the risk for mold in new development. Released during the Mortgage Bankers Association's Commercial Real Estate Finance/Multifamily Housing Convention & Expo in Orlando, the program is designed to reduce damage due to mold, resulting in loan and insurance savings and ultimately encouraging insurers to enter markets they might not otherwise cover, according to Greenguard CEO Carl Smith
"Insurers don't mind risk as long as they can predict it," he pointed out. "The thing about mold is it's been very unpredictable . . . We give (insurers) the stability in the market."
Mold, Technology & Investment: Chase Home Finance Teams with Safety Experts to Offer Incentive-Based Home Developer Loan Programs for Builders Using Mold Retardents (RisMedia.com, CT - Feb 2, 2006)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RISMEDIA, Feb. 3 — Chase Home Finance announced a new builders' incentive program as part of an alliance with No Burn of California to promote preventative safety in the home. Chase Home Finance, the home finance arm of JPMorgan Chase & Co., has extended a loan rate and discount reduction plan to the state's commercial and custom homebuilders that use No Burn of California's fire and mold retardant as part of new home construction.

No Burn of California, based in Rowland Heights, offers fire and mold retardants that deprive wood from igniting and keep mold from getting the food it needs to grow. The company has a line of products that can be sprayed onto the wood during the framing phase of new construction or renovation. There also are products that may be applied to drywall or other surfaces that can accept paint.
