Good Morning,

This week's photo is from the UC Davis website, www.ucdnema.ucdavis.edu, from a course outline for Entomology 135 - Introduction to Biological Control. This is Mastigomycotina, from the Class: Oomycetes, and is a plant pathogen.

In tracking mold stories over the last three years, I've realized that the job with the highest percentage of documented mold exposure is being a Governor of a state. To date, 8% of all governors (Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisianna) have had to be relocated from their Governor's Mansions because of mold.

Hot tips on mold? Please let me know. Send information to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , Cynthia Coulter Mulvihihll, Esq Hyde Mulvihill APC 216 W. Foothill Boulevard Monrovia CA 91016.

Housing inspectors hustle to keep pace (AZ Central.com, AZ - Aug 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On a typical day, Chandler building inspector Larry Lundgren checks out about 18 homes, most of them new. Lundgren starts out at dawn with a list of addresses located near each other. At one stop, he may spend as little as five or 10 minutes pressing on a few walls to make sure drywall is properly nailed. At another, he may spend over an hour inspecting the frame, plumbing and electrical setups. At each, he checks his notes to make sure contractors followed through on fixes from previous inspections.
"I give each job as much time as I can," he said. With more than 1,200 houses going up every week across the Valley, city building-code inspectors are racing to keep up in order to prevent serious defects from reaching home buyers.
Top toxicologist in high demand (Jacksonville Daily Record, FL - Aug 8, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Richard Lipsey has been up to his respirator in mold spores recently. With mold replacing asbestos and radon as the biggest toxic tort facing homeowners and office workers in the U.S. today, Lipsey, a Jacksonville- based toxicologist, has been receiving calls from people all over the country wanting him to look at their mold.

Sounds like an odd, kind of gross request, but as one of the only toxicologists in the world holding a doctorate in forensic mitigation in the field of pesticides and mold, Lipsey is considered by many to be the top expert regarding toxic mold and its removal.

Citizen’s arrest leads to jail - Angry landlord cited for mold assails official (Kansas City Star, MO - Aug 13, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are ways to express your dissatisfaction with government. Making a citizen’s arrest of a government employee near a police station is not one.
An Overland Park man unhappy that his Kansas City, Kan., rental home was cited for code violations allegedly tried to do just that Friday morning.
Mold Can Be Costly, Risky To Health (WRAL.com, NC - Aug 12, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RALEIGH, N.C. -- It is a battle fought everywhere, but especially in the South. Experts say mold needs to be cleaned quickly -- before the price and problem explodes and to keep yourself and your family healthy. A high-profile case of mold infestation at the governor's mansion is costing the state millions of dollars and forcing the governor and his family to move out of the 35,000 square-foot house.

The governor's mansion is more than 100 years old, making the cleanup very expensive. What you might pay to get rid of mold at your house varies.

Mold Forces North Carolina Governor To Move Out Of Mansion (WRAL.com, NC - Aug 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
RALEIGH, N.C, -- An infestation of mold is forcing Gov. Mike Easley and his family to move out of the governor's mansion. From Christmas tours to North Carolina basketball visits, the North Carolina governor's mansion serves as more than the chief executive's home. But with mold invading the 114- year-old Queen Anne style mansion for the second time in four years, work crews will soon move in, while everyone else moves out.
"We tried to patch it up -- and mold, as it is known to do, will grow back -- and it grew back," said Secretary of Administration Gwynn Swinson, who was appointed by the governor. So much mold grew back, Swinson said, that she had to declare a state of emergency in the mansion. Swinson also declared a state of emergency when toxic mold turned up at two North Carolina Central dorms in 2003. Repairs there cost about $9 million.
Mold Allergies - A Major Contributor to Allergic Rhinitis (allergies.about.com - Aug 8, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Molds may be a major contributor to seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as other health problems. Although thousands of molds exist, only a few dozen different types are significant allergens. Mold spores can easily become airborne and can be found almost anywhere. Because they are so small, mold spores may invade the protective mechanisms of the nose and upper respiratory tract.

The most common symptoms associated with exposure to certain molds include the following: nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, aggravation of asthma, cold/flu like symptoms, rashes, fever, shortness of breath, inability to concentrate, fatigue, and sometimes lung infections.

Mold Education: Mold Allergy (Shih-Wen Huang, MD, Medical Director of Allergy Service, Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, University of Florida College of Medicine)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Background: People are exposed to aeroallergens in a variety of settings, both at home and at work. Fungi are ubiquitous airborne allergens and are important causes of human diseases, especially in the upper and lower respiratory tracts. These diseases can occur in persons of various ages.
Fungi as aeroallergens: Airborne spores and other fungi particles are ubiquitous in nonpolar landscapes, especially among field crops, and often form the bulk of suspended biogenic debris. The term mold is often used synonymously with the term fungi. A more precise definition would specify that molds lack macroscopic reproductive structures but may produce visible colonies. Respiratory illness in subjects exposed to rust and dark-spored imperfecti fungi was described more than 60 years ago, and sensitization to diverse fungi is now recognized. Since fungus particles are commonly derived from wholly microscopic sources, exposure hazards are assessed largely through direct sampling of a suspect atmosphere. Because of small size, fungal emanations present special collection requirements to ensure particle viability for culture-based studies.
Court Mold: Clay County Board plans to clean house of courthouse basement, tables zoning discussion (Daily Clay County Advocate-Press, IL - Aug 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Clay County Board decided that there will be a little crying on the courthouse lawn come October. Because of unhealthy conditions in the courthouses basement the county began looking for ways to cut down on mold. The solution is to get rid of paper that is stored in the basement and auction off anything from the basement that the county does not use.

Sue Pettit, County Board Chair, told the board during her report that an inspection of the basement had been completed and the recommendation was to clean house. Brenda Bandy, board member, said that she had been in contact with several auctioneers from the area and that Monty VanDyke had offered the best deal.

After visiting all 34 public school campuses in the territory, the V.I. Board of Education has completed its first-ever annual report, the result of a six-month effort by the board's nine members.

Mold & Insurance: Frequently Asked Questions About Flood Insurance - National Flood Insurance Program may provide mold coverage (Community Dispatch - Aug 11, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Flood insurance policyholders who suffered damages from Hurricane Dennis may have a number of questions about their policies. In an effort to provide the most up-to-date information and ease their concerns, National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) officials have put together answers to the most frequently asked questions.
Damage from mold and/or mildew resulting from the aftereffects of a flood may be covered. Each case is evaluated on an individual basis. Mold and/or mildew conditions that existed prior to a flood are not covered. After a flood, the policyholder is responsible for taking reasonable and appropriate actions to reduce and /or eliminate mold and/or mildew.
Mold & Legislation: No Recovery if Owner Rejects Contractor’s Offer to Repair (Oregon) (Mondaq News Alerts, World - Aug 8, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SB 2525 would amend Oregon’s still relatively new notice of defect law for residential homes. Under the amendment, an owner that rejects an offer of a contractor (or a subcontractor or supplier) to repair a home would be prohibited from recovering against the contractor in an arbitration or court action.

The limitation would only apply with respect to the defects the contractor offered to repair. This would be a very important benefit to homebuilders.

Mold & Technology: Grand Patrician Ultra Touch Mold-Inhibiting Towels from Martex (Dayton Daily News, OH - Aug 10, 2005)

You might want to be on the lookout for products carrying the logo of Microban Antimicrobial Product Protection. A company called Microban International Ltd. started offering a process to embed germ- fighting properties into fabrics and surfaces a couple years ago, and it seems to be catching on this year.

Several new product lines are due out this summer and fall that will include microban protection including a high-end towel line, Grand Patrician Ultra Touch Towels from Martex. Other products scheduled to be introduced this year with Microban protection include Silestone Quartz Countertops and padded Infantino Shopping Cart Covers.

Mold & Technology: Claims of some paints need to be scrutinized (Arizona Republic, AZ - Aug 12, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There's a product out there that claims if you use it on your house, you'll never have to worry about maintenance again. Sound too good to be true? It may be.
Homeowners planning to paint the exteriors of their homes have asked me about ceramic coating. It also is known as radiant barrier paint or low-e paint. Makers claim this type of paint can reduce the frequency of repainting the exterior of your home (even eliminating it altogether), extend the life of roofs and walls, and hide unsightly cracks in stucco. Any time Arizonans hear the phrase "lower your energy bill" during the summer, sweaty ears perk up.
