Homeowners insurance: Use it and lose it - Many insurers refuse to renew policies of homeowners who file claims. (CNN - May 26, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Last year's hurricane season caused heavy underwriting losses at Allstate Insurance.
Now, the company is shedding its nearly 100,000 Florida homeowners, by refusing to renew their policies.
Mold cover-up alleged in hotel sale (KATC, LA - May 25, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NEW ORLEANS A company that bought a New Orleans hotel is suing the former owner, claiming the sale was made without disclosing that the building had a toxic mold problem.

After the sale of the Quality Inn Midtown Hotel, the federal lawsuit says guests began complaining that some of the rooms smelled musty, so the new owner spent a "considerable sum" of money for repairs by January 2005.

Hurricane Follow-Up: Homes, hearts still mired in storm damage (Palm Beach Post, FL - May 30, 2005)

Three times Cheryl Hutchinson Paynter beat back cancer with an indomitable can-do attitude. But even the usually optimistic Paynter found her spirit crushed trying to repair her Palm Springs townhome after Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne.

Nine months after Jeanne, tar paper haphazardly covers holes in her cedar shake roof. Like festering wounds, black mold drips from cracks in her exterior walls.

Visiting Vet - Aspergillus-induced Fungal pneumonia in Dogs (Martha's Vineyard Times, MA - May 25, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first few years of practice, I kept a small boarding kennel at my home. There was a raft of pups who visited frequently. Dexter. Fastjack. Peaches. Elsa. I was single, childfree, and had a lot of time to devote to my tail-wagging wards. Elsa, a four-month-old chocolate lab puppy, was particularly needy. She played well with friends but when nighttime came, and everyone snuggled down in their crates.
Elsa would fuss, whine, and bark. One night she would not stop. I went down and opened her crate. Before I could say "Good Girl," she bounded up the stairs and exuberantly leapt into my bed. It wasn't exactly what I had planned, but, oh well, it was better than the barking. Elsa and I spent several cozy nights together. Over the years she outgrew her fear and slept happily in her crate.
Mold Allergies - A Major Contributor to Allergic Rhinitis (allergies.about.com - May 29, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Molds may be a major contributor to seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, as well as other health problems.

Although thousands of molds exist, only a few dozen different types are significant allergens. Mold spores can easily become airborne and can be found almost anywhere. Because they are so small, mold spores may invade the protective mechanisms of the nose and upper respiratory tract.

Mold Eduction: Penicillium expansum - mycotoxin: patulin
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I. Introduction: Blue mold is the most important postharvest decay of stored apples in the United States. The losses from this disease can be significant but can be substantially reduced by following proper sanitation and control measures. The fungus, Penicillium expansum, not only causes fruit decay but also produces the carcinogenic mycotoxin patulin. This toxin may rise to unacceptable levels in fruit destined for processing and may also result in off flavors.
II. Symptoms: The appearance of the decay caused by most species of Penicillium is very similar. The rotted areas are soft, watery and light brown in color. The surface of older lesions may be covered by bluish-green spores that initially are nearly snow white in color. The lesions are of varying shades of brown, being lighter on the yellow or green varieties and on the pale cheeks of colored varieties and showing dark shades of brown on the most highly colored varieties. The soft, watery consistency of the rotted tissue seems to be a more distinguishing feature than the color variations. Two characteristics are of importance in the recognition of P. expansum, the most common species, namely the musty odor and the formation of conidial tufts or coremia on the surface of well developed lesions.
School Mold: Manatee Elementary parents demand air-quality tests (Palm Beach Post, FL - May 24, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A week after air-quality screening began at Mariposa Elementary School, a small group of parents demanded Monday that the same be done at another Port St. Lucie school.

Gathered in front of Manatee Elementary School for several hours Monday afternoon, about eight parents insisted that in light of recent test results at Mariposa showing mold in the school's air ducts, all 32 schools in the St. Lucie County district should be tested for mold.

Court Mold: Senate OKs temporary move for two courts (Portsmouth Herald News, NH - May 27, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CONCORD - The Senate passed legislation Thursday to temporarily move a pair of district courts out of unsafe or inaccessible buildings in Exeter and Hampton to better buildings in neighboring towns.
The Hampton District Court would be free to relocate to Seabrook soon after Jan. 1, when HB 158 would take effect.
Mold & Insurance: Insurance Claim Tips for Mold (United Policy Holders
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Traditionally, mold damage has been covered where it results from a covered peril, such as a broken pipe, a storm, or fire suppression efforts, but not where it occurs gradually over time due to wear and tear. However, public awareness and scientific knowledge of the health hazards of mold have increased dramatically. Techniques for cleaning up mold have become more sophisticated and expensive. As a result, insurers are panicking, refusing to cover mold claims under existing policies and rewriting their policy forms to exclude all coverage for mold, regardless of origin. This in turn is creating a national crisis. UP believes that a combination of governmental regulation, proper underwriting and competitive forces in the private insurance marketplace will remedy the situation.

1. TAKE MOLD CONTAMINATION SERIOUSLY. Mold can cause serious illness and property damage. Insurance claim representatives, adjusters and industry consultants are fond of dismissively telling policyholders that mold has been around as long as people have been living in houses. Whenever you hear that, cite Leviticus 14:33-48 to them- chapter and verse-and tell them that for just as long, "mold remediation professionals" have been tearing out mold contaminated walls, and demolishing entire mold contaminated houses:

Mold & Legislation: House plan makes hurricane insurance changes (Naples Daily News (free electronic subscription), FL - May 29, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TALLAHASSEE - Homeowners steeling themselves for the 2005 hurricane season should also prepare for likely insurance rate hikes and a handful of other reforms passed by lawmakers following last year's onslaught of storms.
A handful of insurance companies already have received rate hikes to offset increased costs of reinsurance, sinkhole coverage and other factors unrelated to the $20 billion in insured losses suffered last year. Other companies are expected to follow suit.
Mold & Legislation: New Bill to Toughen Florida Building Code (PRWire, May 25, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TAMPA, Fla., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- With hurricane season beginning June 1st, a new bill designed to toughen the Florida Building Code is making its way through both the Florida House and Senate, and is expected to be signed into law by Governor Jeb Bush any day. The bill, HB-835, will eliminate a provision in the existing code, which allows for structures to be built without window protection if certain other building criteria are met. The legislation was inspired by a number of research studies conducted after the 2004 hurricane season. The studies concluded that proper window protection was highly effective but illustrated that the "designing for internal pressures" provision allowed wind and water to enter buildings, thereby destroying contents and creating severe mold problems.

Representative Nancy Detert (R - Venice) and Senator Evelyn Lynn (R - Ormond Beach) sponsored the legislation and were honored at a recent luncheon in conjunction with the Governor's Hurricane Conference in Tampa. Representative Detert accepted a safety award co-presented by the Protecting People First Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving glass safety, and Solutia Inc., a manufacturer of protective interlayers for impact- resistant glass. Richard Lindstrom, a Florida resident who lost his uncle due to wind-borne debris flying through unprotected windows caused by Hurricane Charley, gave the award. In an emotional statement, Lindstrom described the tragedy and expressed his gratitude for Rep. Detert's help in making Florida a safer place to live.

Megan's Law - Information on Registered Sex Offenders. This is a link to California's Megan's Law database. Many other states have the same kind of registry -- go to Google, and type in Megan's Law, and your state, to see if your legislature has enacted it yet.

Only convicted sex offenders who are required to register are listed. The name, age, address and -- in most cases -- photos are provided, along with the nature of the offense(s). I'm so glad that as a parent, I can show my children who to stay away from.
