Good Morning,

This week's photo is of Aspergillus flavus, one of the three Aspergillus spp. that produces Aflatoxins. This is from the www.aflatoxin.info website, a site sponsored by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).

Plaintiff in Mold Lawsuit Commits Suicide (Ocean City, MD - Apr 8, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a lawsuit filed against Monogram Building and Design and other firms last summer, John Messner contended water got into the house and caused a mold infestation problem. He had photographs showing himself sitting in the living room holding an umbrella because of water entering the house.
Messner became ill, was hospitalized a number of times and had varying diagnoses. Eventually, he was told that the mold had made him sick.
Suicide by Aflatoxins Fails (Washington Times, DC - April 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the Iraq invasion turned up no WMD, a Wall Street Journal editorial seized on inspector David Kay's mention of Iraqi research on aflatoxin -- a carcinogenic mold that is researched because excessive aflatoxin on nuts can result in export bans. A U.S. lab worker once tried to commit suicide by ingesting a lot of aflatoxin, but failed.

To use aflatoxin, anthrax, botox or ricin to kill more than a half-dozen people, you have to imagine some device for effectively delivering such agents. When it came to imaginary delivery systems, WMD fear- mongering escalated to the absurd.

Leaking Roof that caused Mold may have prompted suicide (Sarasota Herald-Tribune, FL - Mar 23, 2005)

PORT CHARLOTTE -- Friends say Ed Brodziak fell into a depression after months of haggling with a roofing company to fix his hurricane-damaged home.

The 86-year-old widower had a bad cough that he blamed on the mold growing in his house. He was tired of sweeping the water out every time it rained.

Powerful mold-inhibiting bacteria patented (Medical News Today, UK - April 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bacteria that produce lactic acid have been used for thousands of years to preserve food. Some lactic acid bacteria also produce several other mold- inhibiting substances and are therefore of special interest to agriculture and the foodstuffs industry. This is demonstrated in a dissertation by Jörgen Sjögren from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU. One of the bacteria strains studied has been patented and will be part of a new biological conservation preparation.
Humans have long used different micro-organisms to season and conserve foods. The Sumerians, for example, used yeast fungus to make beer 4,000 years ago. Other micro-organisms that humans have utilized for a long time are lactic acid bacteria and propionic acid bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria have been used to make cultured milk, cheese, yoghurt, and fermented sausage, and they are also put to work in silaging. Propionic acid bacteria have primarily been exploited in the production of certain large-hole cheeses, such as Swedish Grevé and Emmental.
Follow-Up: Ferry company sues city over mold problem at Portland terminal (MaineToday.com, ME - Apr 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia - Scotia Prince Cruise Lines has filed a $20-million lawsuit against the city of Portland, Maine, claiming it failed to eliminate mold problems in its passenger terminal.

The operator of the ferry service between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, announced this week it was cancelling its service for the season because it didn´t want to jeopardize the health of its staff or customers because of the mold.

Riverside, California County Public Health Program aims to battle mold in homes (Press-Enterprise (free electronic subscription), CA - Apr 9, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Riverside County Public Health Department is offering qualified families in desert and Pass communities an opportunity to eliminate household mold contributing to childhood asthma.
At least one child in the household must be diagnosed with asthma to be eligible.
Mold Education: Antifungal Drugs - Azoles
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The azole antifungal agents inhibit the synthesis of ergosterol by blocking the action of 14-alpha- demethylase.

The most well known is Fluconozole. Fluconazole is a widely used bis-triazole antifungal agent. As with other triazoles, it has five-membered ring structures containing three nitrogen atoms. It is marketed as Diflucan® by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals (http://www.pfizer.com). Both oral and intravenous formulations of fluconazole are available.

School Mold: Class Action Status Denied in Florida School Mold Lawsuit (Bonita Daily News, FL - Apr 7, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Staff at Lee County schools can't join a lawsuit filed against the district by nine employees who say they were sickened by exposure to hazardous asbestos, mold and other toxins, a judge has ruled.
Lee County Circuit Judge William C. McIver ruled that they couldn't turn their complaint into a class action lawsuit, barring any of the Lee County School District's more than 10,000 employees from joining in.
OSHA Teams with State To Offer Free Consultation (Oak Brook Business Ledger, IL - Apr 6, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Small-business owners can avoid costly accidents and injuries by taking advantage of assistance from a combined state and federal program. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that businesses spend $171 billion each year on costs associated with on-site injuries and illnesses. These expenditures generally come straight out of a company's profits and can comprise as much as 5 percent of its total revenue. This makes the free safety-consultation process separate from a standard OSHA inspection; therefore, no citations are issued during the process. Companies are supposed to benefit from being proactive, not be punished for possible inadvertent safety infringements.

"Mold is always an issue," Newquist said. "People are always getting sick or ill in the workplace because of unchecked mold. The consultation division has state- of-the-art mold-checking equipment. They use tools that would cost companies $50,000 to buy and do themselves. This is a tremendous value."

Mold & Insurance: Local family battles insurance company six months after water damaged home (Bonita Daily News, FL - Apr 8, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Awaking to a strange noise the night of Oct. 4th, Pam Smith thought an intruder had broken into the house. But when her husband stepped out the bedroom door to investigate, the slosh of water was the first sound she heard.
A hose to the dishwasher had come loose, gushing water across the kitchen floor linoleum and into the bathroom and hallway. The couple spent hours sopping up the water with whatever they could grab.
Mold & Litigation: Problems lurking behind bad stucco (Kansas City Star, MO - Apr 10, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dwight Orr suspected he had a problem when he saw water leaking into his $500,000 Parkville home - but he never dreamed it was literally rotting away.

When workers tore off the exterior's synthetic stucco in 2003, they found water damage and mold so extensive that the repair bill totaled a staggering $105,000.

Mold & Litigation: Farmers Sued for Bad Faith in Ohio Mold Case (Ohio News Network, OH - Apr 6, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For four years now, the Traynor family has been waiting to go home. Before they can walk in, though, $75,000 worth of work needs to be done to a house that was recently assessed as being worth $100
The problems started with a 2001 water pipe break. Within days mold started to grow in the basement of their Green Township home. Paige Traynor-Welsh says her insurance company, Farmer's Insurance, hired crews to clean the mold two separate times, but both times missed it.
Mold & Technology: Consumer Reports - Air cleaners: What those 'Seals of Approval' Really Are (May 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ads for air cleaners from Sharper Image and Oreck include a Seal of Truth from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), a Washington, D.C.- based group. Sharper Image ads also display a Seal of Approval from the British Allergy Foundation, now known as Allergy UK, and refer to university studies claimed to support Sharper Image's air-cleaner claims.

What seals don't tell you. The AAFA's Seal of Truth program is open to manufacturers who submit a $5,000 application fee. According to the AAFA, companies are asked to submit "independent" research for review by a panel of experts, who determine whether a product's performance meets its claims. If the panel says it does, manufacturers can apply the seal to that product for two years. Fewer than 12 allergy-related products, including vacuums and cleaning products, have the seal; Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze and Oreck's XL are the only air cleaners with it.
