SCHERTZ, Texas - In the Fairhaven subdivision in Schertz, the faults
are readily apparent in this Pulte-built community: cracking walls,
sidewalks, driveways and more.
Residents like Dan Hollestelle worry that their homes are breaking apart and losing value.
"We
have let them in our house multiple times to fix our problems and now
... my foundation is patched,â Hollestelle said. âThey call it fixed."
Hollestelle was one of several homeowners who showed up at Schertz City Hall on Tuesday to meet with the city manager.
They
presented a list of proposed ordinances that would insure better
building, including requiring builders to post a $25,000 bond to fix
problems, require full disclosure from the builder of things like
warranties and risks and require an engineered foundation.
Janet Ahmad, of Homeowners for Better Building, said builders are not held accountable for mistakes.
"They get nothing when they build a bad house,â Ahmad said. âThey don't get a ticket, they don't lose their license."
Residents say Pulte has scheduled meetings with them but that on two occasions the meetings have been canceled.
Homeowners are not happy with the city either, saying there's been little progress.
City Manager John Kessel disagrees.
"If
you can have meaningful dialog and if you can go ahead and start to
close that gap, then that's the definition of progress," Kessel said.
Pulte,
meanwhile, said it has been working with other homeowners to get
problems fixed and it's working to the owners' satisfaction. http://www.ksat.com/news/defenders/Angry-Schertz-homeowners-decry-lack-of-progress/-/478436/10161026/-/14q6g6uz/-/index.html
