SAN ANTONIO -- Several homeowners in a southwest San Antonio neighborhood say they were not told their homes were built over an old sewer treatment plant and are demanding the builder buy back the homes.

Residents in Stablewood Farms, some wearing radiation suits and gas masks, were waving signs in protest on Monday outside the D.R. Horton corporate officers. The residents claim there homes have foundation problems and that there is often a foul smell in the neighborhood.

D.R. Horton said the lots in Stablewood Farms were already finished when the company purchased the property near SW Loop 410 and Highway 90 around 2002. The sewer treatment plant had closed in 1992.

D.R. Horton said in a statement:

"It is our understanding that the treatment plant closed with regulatory oversight from the state. In response to allegations from a few concerned homeowners, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency initiated investigations. D.R. Horton assisted in those investigations by providing information we obtained from the developer and the owner of the treatment plant. Based on the investigation, both the TCEQ and the EPA have advised D.R. Horton that they have closed their files on this matter with no recommendations or suggestions for any changes or remediation.

"The satisfaction of our homeowners is a top priority, and we encourage any homeowner to contact us directly if they ever have concerns with their home. D.R. Horton is committed to superior customer service and providing families with quality homes and neighborhoods in San Antonio."
