Schertz homeowners demanding buyback

SCHERTZ -- About 45 to 60 homeowner’s in the Fairhaven subdivision are asking Pulte Homes to buy back their houses.

The homeowners say they have had foundation problems that are also causing other issues.

“We have cracked foundations, vertical cracks, horizontal cracks, tile moving, ceilings that are moving up,” said homeowner Faye Touve.

Touve and other residents started a campaign against Pulte Homes on Saturday, sending letters to local, state and federal agencies.

“They’ve put 46 piers underneath my house and have gone down 48 feet and we're still having reoccurring issues with foundation failure,” said homeowner Brian Benavides.

In an e-mail, Pulte Homes stated they will not offer buybacks to the homeowners.

“We intend to stand behind our homes and repair any necessary issues to the home - with all related costs paid for by Pulte,” according to the email.

Pulte also stated that one of the problems is that residents in that subdivision aren’t following up with Pulte for them to fix their cracks and monitor foundation shifts.

The residents said they should not have these issues with their houses, most of which are less than 5 years old.

Brian Benavides said he's lost value in his home.

“They appraised my house before and then I shared all the information afterwards and they told me about how much I was going to lose, which is huge, a huge amount of money,” Benavides said.

Touve said, “They're saying that buy back is not on the table, but were not accepting this.”
