Neighborhood Warhead Removal To Begin
Official Say Three-Pound Bombs Could Still Be Live

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Salvage crews are preparing to remove unexploded practice bombs in a south Arlington neighborhood.

The World War II vintage explosives turned up in a neighborhood off of Matlock Road. The neighborhood was once a Navy bombing range.

The Army Corps of Engineers began mapping the area last May during the first stage of the removal process.

Neighbors say they didn't know that their homes were built on top of an old military bombing range until residents began periodically unearthing warheads.

"If we had known before, we wouldn't have built," resident Ken Jones said. "But we're here now, so we've got to roll with the punches."

The site was used for bombing practice during the 1940s, but untold numbers of bombs remain buried about the neighborhood.

The three-pound bombs, or shells, could still be live, according to government officials.

That possibility has kept neighbors on edge.

"It's a worry knowing that we could have bombs in the bottom of our homes," Sonia Cuniga said.

Bomb removal is scheduled to begin next week and may take up to six months.
