Video Report: Shoddy Work and Mold Forces Family from Home

into a Mirasol home through SAHA’s Lease-to-Buy program more
than five years ago. (News 4 )
A mother of three says she had to leave her home because of mold and shoddy work. Then she was forced to move her family from the hotel the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA) put them up in. Now, she finds out her home she's still paying for is still not fixed. And some furniture in a storage unit is ruined.

The family had lived in the home for years before they had to get out. Now they want the money they invested to buy the home back and to replace their ruined belongings.

Cabrera says, “I'm just fed up. I want my money out of my account and I want to move on with my life.”

For most of us the dream of owning a home is a reachable goal. Patricia Cabrera thought she was on her way when she moved into a Mirasol home through SAHA’s Lease-to-Buy program more than five years ago. Cabrera's home, like so many others in the Mirasol subdivision, had a mold problem and bad foundation. She packed most of her family’s stuff in the garage, the rest in a storage unit.

SAHA's Deborah Floch says now its goal is to get Cabrera, her family, and her stuff into a permanent home. Cabrera wants more -- she's been paying rent out of her lease to her own account for a home she can't live in.

Floch says, “Anything is negotiable at this time. I think the housing authority is wanting to do what's best for the families”

For Cabrera, it’s finding a new way to reach her goal of owning a home. In the meantime, the family will be moving into an apartment with a Section 8 voucher from SAHA.The family does have a meeting with the housing authority on Friday to discuss what money she may be able to get back.
