More than six months after Beaufort County hired experts to determine whether county building inspectors are doing their jobs properly, the verdict is still out.
The review of the building codes department is being handled by International Accreditation Services, based in California. The company has only about half the documents it needs from the county to do the review, which will be exhaustive and time-consuming, county Building Codes director Arthur Cummings said Thursday.
County administrator Gary Kubic hired the firm in October to review the building codes department after learning that county inspectors had failed to spot faulty trusses in the roofs of more than 2,000 Sun City Hilton Head homes.
"In light of having to do this and still run a department, it's not going to go as fast as some people may think," Cummings said.
Cummings said the material the county has to provide to the firm was voluminous and included local and state regulations, topographical information, and detailed personnel files for every employee in the department.
Cummings said he'd turned over half of the documents so far and would get the rest together while the company is reviewing the first batch.
It was unclear how long such reviews typically take. Several calls to International Accreditation Services on Thursday were not returned.
