Ten Years of Service to Texas Homeowners
Texas Watch has been fighting alongside homeowners since our creation in 1998. We believe in strong accountability measures that protect homeowners. For too long, insurance companies and home builders have escaped responsibility for their actions.
We have continuously researched and reported on the anti-consumer practice of binding arbitration. Binding arbitration makes it virtually impossible for homeowners to hold their builders accountable if their homes are not built well. In 2000, we released a report on the destructive nature of binding arbitration.

Texas Watch activists Eliza & Bob Bushn's dream home so was poorly constructed that it had to be torn down. Their builder escaped accountability and the Bushns received no assistance from the TRCC. |
Since the creation of the (TRCC) in 2003, Texas Watch has worked with activists across the state, as well as our coalition partners, to raise awareness on the major problems with the agency. Texas Watch's homebuilder reform activists have been the victims of shoddy homebuilders. Instead of finding assistance at the TRCC, they get lost in a costly bureaucratic maze. Last session, Texas Watch activists came to Austin to visit their lawmakers in person and speak out about the TRCC and the lack of justice for bad homebuilders.
Texas Watch has stood by responsible homeowners that are unjustly treated by their insurance companies. Texas homeowners are punished by their insurance companies by price gouging, being denied coverage, credit scoring, redlining and unfair claims handling. We have continually pushed for legislation that will bring real insurance reform to the insurance industry. We also regularly work with the media on exposing the insurance crisis that affects so many Texas families today.
Always looking forward, we are already planning our legislative efforts for the 2009 session. Texas Watch will continue to work for real reforms, such as stronger builder accountability and reorganization of the TRCC. Texas Watch activists will have the unique opportunity to get involved in the TRCC sunset process. The agency will be undergoing a top to bottom review by the Sunset Commission, a panel of legislators and citizens. Activists can provide input in the process by testifying at hearings and sending letters. Texas Watch will also have a hand in this process, ensuring that the agency is streamlined and improved for homeowners.
With your help, Texas Watch will continue our work to pressure the Texas Supreme Court, the legislature, insurers and home builders to treat Texas homeowners with respect and to keep them safe. Our accomplishments would not have been possible without the support of Texas Watch activists. | |
