Good Morning,

I drafted this edition when I was at the beautiful Barton Creek Resort in Austin, Texas, so you are spared the usual pleasant look at fruiting fungi. I was visiting my sister, Deb Coulter, who is a sales manager for Barton Creek Resorts. This week's photo is of her resort, in honor of the visit.

Hot tips on mold? Please let me know. Send information to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , Cynthia Coulter Mulvihihll, Esq Hyde Mulvihill APC 216 W. Foothill Boulevard Monrovia CA 91016.

Whistleblower 9: Couple Says Toxic Mold Ran Them Out Of House (WSOCtv.com, NC - May 18, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Doug Lincoln and Linda Miller bought a house that they said is over-run with toxic mold. They thought a home inspection would have protected them, but it didn't. Lincoln and Miller are paying the mortgage on a house in Wadesboro, but for seven months, they've been living in a tiny camper out back because they said the house started to make them sick.
Lincoln said the house started making him sick the day he moved in -- a year and a half ago. "I said there's something drastically the matter with me -- throwing up constantly, headaches, (and) colds," he said. Lincoln and Miller spent months trying to figure out what was wrong with him and the house. Finally last September -- 10 months after they bought the house and paid for a home inspection -- they discovered dangerous mold growing under the house was creeping inside.
Racehorses, Asthmatics, Meatpackers May Have Similar Etiology Of Airway Disturbances (Science Daily - May 23, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BETHESDA, Md. (May 23, 2005) -- When you exercise or work outside in winter, that dry feeling at the back of your throat indicates the cold air has irritated your throat. Racehorses share a similar experience: exercising in below-freezing air causes mild airway injury.

The paper reported: "the potential effect of the cytokine expression shift described in this study and the resulting alteration in antigen responses are consistent with common pulmonary diseases of both equine and human athletes. Antibody-mediated pulmonary hypersensitivity (heaves) is common in horses and has been linked to increased expression of TH2 cytokine expression. The most prominent antigens identified in this syndrome are mold spores found in hay and straw bedding, thus closely linking the development of heaves to the horse's environment."

More Follow-Up: FAA plans to remove mold from Detroit Metropolitan Airport tower (DetNews.com, MI - May 14, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ROMULUS-- The Federal Aviation Administration plans to remove toxic mold from the air traffic control tower at Detroit Metropolitan Airport next week.
The issue had prompted an inquiry signed by nine members of Congress, who wanted to know what was being done about the problem. The air traffic controllers union had said that the mold may have caused allergic reactions.
Illness Linked To Moldy Airline Food (WFMY News 2, NC - May 23, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Honolulu, HI -- The outbreak has sparked one lawsuit, filed Thursday, against airline caterer Gate Gourmet Inc., which included the carrots in meals served last August 22-24.

The company, based in Virginia and Switzerland, was sent a warning letter by the federal Food and Drug Administration on April 21 citing violations found in a February inspection of its Honolulu facility, such as "pink slimy substance" dripping onto the conveyor of the pot washing machine, live cockroaches and flies, and mold growing on the windows of a refrigerator.

Manatee Elementary mothers protest mold exposure at school - Angry parents demand the school look into possible mold exposure (Fort Pierce Tribune, FL - May 23, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PORT ST. LUCIE - It took about 15 minutes of holding white signs scribbled with markers for someone to stop and share a story with the six women standing across from Manatee Elementary School.
Nancy Adrian parked her Ford SUV along the grass where mothers including Jennifer Graves, Clarisa Ruppert, Ann Marie Gray and Melissa Duren were protesting what they say are health problems at the Heatherwood Boulevard school.
Mold Education: OSHA - A Brief Guide to Mold in the Workplace
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Safety and Health Information Bulletin is not a standard or regulation, and it creates no new legal obligations. The Bulletin is advisory in nature, informational in content, and is intended to assist building managers, custodians, and others who are responsible for building maintenance. Contractors and other professionals (e.g., environmental consultants and health or safety professionals) who respond to mold and moisture situations in buildings, as well as members of the general public, also may want to refer to these guidelines.

The Occupational Safety and Health Act requires employers to comply with hazard-specific safety and health standards as issued and enforced by either the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), or an OSHA-approved State Plan. In addition, Section 5(a)(1), the General Duty Clause, requires employers to provide their employees with a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious physical harm. Employers can be cited for violating the General Duty Clause if there is such a recognized hazard and they do not take reasonable steps to prevent or abate the hazard. However, failure to implement these guidelines is not, in itself, a violation of the General Duty Clause. Citations can only be based on standards, regulations, and the General Duty Clause.

School Mold: Second firm hired to probe school environment - Brookfield Central teacher on leave as officials continue to search for answers (Waukesha Freeman, WI - May 21, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BROOKFIELD - David Ross feels like he's chasing shadows. Since April, he's been trying to find out what is causing at least two teachers and one staff member at Brookfield Central High School to develop a rash-like skin ailment.
"I keep hearing that there are other people, but I can't do anything until I find out who has the problems and where they are," said Ross, district director of facilities management.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
STAMFORD -- A state health and safety inspector made a surprise visit to police headquarters yesterday in response to a complaint about lead contamination, poor ventilation and mold in the building.

The Stamford Police Association filed a complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration last month, saying the police department's firing range had hazardous health conditions and the men's locker room contained mold.

MoldWash Saves the Earth (Business Wire, CA - May 19, 2005)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 2005--This month MoldWash(TM) USA is preparing to take over the household cleaning agent world with the launch of their new product, MoldWash Household (TM). The new product will hit shelves at Albertsons (R), and Do It Centers(R), along with retailers which already stock the revolutionary Morwear Paint(TM) products on May 1st for wide distribution.
The ever charismatic and creative mind behind the Betanix(R) formula, Eric Von Knipe, has begun a coup with his revolutionary invention. The Betanix(R) line of paints and cleaners are advanced because they do not just mask or cover up mold and fungus, as so many bleaching agents do. The genius of the Betanix (R) formula is that it actually protects, prevents, and eliminates mold growth. The legal climate surrounding mold related damage has elevated at an alarming rate. With the introduction of MoldWash Household (TM), Von Knipe is hoping to stop the onslaught of litigation by decreasing the actual damage to homes and health created by mold.
