Nearly 1000 builders suspended
Mon, 14 Aug 2006
The Mpumalanga construction company which was ordered to stop building by the Pretoria High Court is one of nearly 1000 builders who may not operate, said the National Home Builders' Registration Council (NHBRC) on Monday.
The court ordered Nelspruit-based Otim Ltd to stop operations after the NHBRC discovered it was building despite being suspended.
Judge John Motata found that Otim had provided misleading information to the NHBRC and was not supposed to do any construction pending a review of its suspension, reported SABC.
Home-owners protected
The NHBRC lists on its website 979 builders nationally which it has suspended from operations for various infringements of the Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act. The law is intended to protect home-owners from unscrupulous builders.
NHBRC legal manager Mncedi Vakalisa confirmed the suspensions and said this meant those builders were legally not permitted to operate.
"They are not allowed to enter into contracts, they're not allowed to build," said Vakalisa.
He said the list had been compiled over a number of years but that those listed were all still suspended.
Of those suspended, nearly half â 451 of them â are in the Western Cape. There are 227 builders suspended in Gauteng, 153 in KwaZulu-Natal, 38 in the Eastern Cape, 38 in Limpopo, 27 in Limpopo, 21 in the North West, 16 in the Free State, and eight in the Northern Cape.
Vakalisa advised home-owners to check the NHBRC website for builders' credentials before hiring them.
Vakalisa said builders were suspended for various reasons, including sub-standard building.
"They build houses which sometimes have structural defects. We tell them to fix them. If they refuse, we suspend them."
