Title: Homebuilding 101 Post by: Ray Koenig on August 25, 2008, 03:03:29 am Who needs educating more—builders, government, or consumers?
There’s a LOT of shoddy construction out there! Some builders only want your money. They don’t care about you, or their product. In fact, some builders don’t know any more about building than your Aunt Eloise. They hire the cheapest labor that they can, and we get stuck with what the builders don’t pay for. The internet is replete with stories of shoddy construction. (Mine, which documents widespread shoddy construction, can be found at http://peretired.blogspot.com/ (http://peretired.blogspot.com/)) Government is supposed to be the “checks and balance” for us. There are building codes and government inspectors who are supposed to be looking out for you. But, some are not! (again, see http://peretired.blogspot.com/ (http://peretired.blogspot.com/) for an example of widespread government incompetence.) Finally, there are us consumers. We get left holding the bag. But, are we speaking out? Only a relative few. If you don’t speak out, then expect your children and your grandchildren to get the same shaft that you did. Who needs educating more? It’s a close call, but I say consumers do. It starts with us. If we don’t demand that something be done, then it’ll continue to be the way that it is. Ray, you state Some Are Not." Really, it's the majority are not. They could not care less. Look at what is happening with the subprime mess. The government intervened and helped to try and bail out some builders and homeowners. I have heard Congressman Al Green in Houston speak several times. I have called his office and even attended meetings to mention people had to foreclose due to shoddy construction. It does not phase them. In Tx. they passed a law stating business cannot display signs in the right of way because it detracts from the scenery. (most were builder signs) Well, of course the city and surrounding areas are full of those signs. The law was passed but the same reps. who helped pass it voted against all consumer friendly bills to help victims of builders. People Like Patricia Harless. Debbie Riddle, ex state rep. Corbin Van Arsdale, almost all the Republicans in the Texas state house voted against all the good bills brought forth. Well, they are voted into office again. What can we expect? So many people get on this site and the only ones posting are the regulars. people put complaints on but do not bother with the forum. Yet, they will go on other boards and complain. Truly remarkable.
